The following bibliography lists reference material dealing with Indian boarding schools during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These resources include material found in the Labriola National American Indian Data Center in the University Libraries at Arizona State University, websites, and other research facilities. GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT BOARDING SCHOOLS The most famous boarding school for Indian children was the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, founded by Richard Pratt in 1879. The philosophy and intent of this and most subsequent schools was to assimilate Indian children by removing them from their native cultures, and teaching them the manners, dress, and job skills that were deemed important by the school founders and administrators. While boarding schools still exist, most had changed their practices of forced assimilation by the 1930s. This bibliography only covers the schools from 1879 to 1940. It does not contain any novels. It is not a complete list.

Land O'Lakes, Wisconsin
Conserve School was the dream of the late industrialist, James R. Lowenstine. After his death in 1996, his 1200-acre estate in far northern Wisconsin began the transformation to the campus that will have an estimated enrollment of 140 students for the 2003/2004 school year. The housing, academic, athletic/recreation, and other buildings occupy approximately 100 acres. The remaining 1100 acres of lakes and woods, abutting the Sylvania Wilderness, provide a vast outdoor laboratory and recreation site for cross-country skiing, hiking, kayaking, and camping.
Students of Conserve School will prepare for their future with hands on education. Classes will be interdisciplinary with emphasis on ethical decision-making, critical thinking, environmental stewardship, innovation, effective communication, and creativity.

Private vs. Public Schools: What's the Difference?
(Page 1 of 3) Your goal is to find a school that will meet your child's needs. But how do you choose between a public school and a private school? By Victoria Thorp and Jesse James, GreatSchools.net Staff
Cost
Public schools cannot charge tuition. They are funded through federal, state and local taxes. When you pay your taxes, you are paying for your child's education and the education of other children in your community. Private schools cost money. Private schools do not receive tax revenues, but instead are funded through tuition, fundraising, donations and private grants. According to the National Association of Independent Schools, the median tuition for private day schools in the United States is close to $12,000 for grades 1 to 3, $13,000 for grades 6 to 8 and $15,000 for grades 9 to 12. The median tuition for boarding schools is $12,000 for grades 1 to 3, $27,000 for grades 6 to 9, and $28,000 for grades 9 to 12. Parochial schools generally charge somewhat less.
