FLORIDA MINK
By Rob Norman
Illustrated by Lizabeth West
Ah, the elusive mink! A weasel-like carnivore about the size of a house cat and semi-aquatic in habit, this creature is hard to find. It has been sought after for centuries and almost hunted to extinction for its fine fur.
Generally, mink are glossy, dark chocolate brown in appearance with a slender body up to 2 feet long, short legs and a 7- to 8-inch bushy tail. It has small, rounded ears and (in Florida) a white chin. Mink have 34 teeth, with four prominent canine teeth to help kill prey. Mink have rather long and supple bodies with relatively short legs. There are five toes on each partially webbed foot.
Wild mink are fierce, solitary carnivores. Their average life span in the wild is less than three years. The mink is native only to North America. There are a number of subspecies varying in size, fur quality and appearance in various geographical locations.
In Florida the mink is found in coastal habitats along the Gulf Coast south to Hernando County and along the Atlantic Coast south to Matanzas Inlet. The Everglades Mink is found in shallow freshwater marshes of the Everglades and Big Cypress Swamp.

Mink
Scientific Name
Mustela vison
Description Like most members of the weasel family, the mink has a long, slender body and short legs. The tail is about two-fifths as long as the body. Adult males are longer (21-24 inches) and heavier (2-3 3/4 pounds) than adult females (16 3/4-21 inches; 1 1/4-1 3/4 pounds). Most wild mink are dark brown except for a white chin and a tail that's tipped with black. Some have one or more irregular white patches on their throats or chests. A mink's ears are short, barely extending above its fur.
Domestic mink have been bred selectively for many generations to attain a larger size and wider variety of colors than their wild cousins. Trade names like standard, demi-buff, pearl, sapphire, and gunmetal refer to color strains ranging from jet black to pure white and bluish-gray. Domestic mink occasionally escape into the wild, but few survive. Mink are found in every county in Illinois. They're most abundant in the glacial lakes area of
northeastern Illinois, counties bordering the lower Mississippi River, and the southern third of the state. While they still are common, wild mink are less abundant than they were 50-100 years ago because of habitat loss caused by development, stream channelization, and drainage of wetlands.
Habitat Mink live along rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, and marshes. Shorelines with grass, brush, trees, or aquatic vegetation like cattails provide good cover and abundant prey. Abandoned burrows dug by muskrats are their favorite places to rest and raise young, but they will use cavities in brush or rock piles, logjams, and the exposed roots of trees. A den can have several entrances, and includes a nest chamber about 1 foot in diameter that is sometimes lined with grass, leaves, fur, or feathers.

CONTROL OF NORTH AMERICAN MINK OUTSIDE THEIR NATIVE RANGE
Summary
The North American mink is a mustelid (order Carnivora) that has been introduced to many countries for commercial fur production. Escapes from fur farms have resulted in large breeding populations in the wild. There are several potential problems associated with mink for native wildlife and domestic stock. For native wildlife, mink may be considered a threat as predators competitors or as vectors of disease Control and eradication programs are now being considered in order to completely remove mink from some areas or to reduce the negative impact that they may be having. Centre for Conservation Science is using a modelling approach to help determine the most effective and efficient strategy for controlling mink. References for work cited in this webpage are provided.
Description and Behaviour
The North American mink ( Mustela vison , Schreber 1777) is a member of the family Mustelidae. It is a medium-sized carnivore with an elongated body approximately 30cm long, relatively short limbs, and a tail approximately a third of the body length. Wild native American mink are uniformly dark brown but breeding in fur farms (or ranches) has resulted in a wide range of pelage colours, and consequently escaped feral mink may vary in colour from white, grey or fawn through to black. American mink are semi-aquatic, generalist predators. They are very adaptable and can exploit a wide range of foods. Generally solitary, both males and females are territorial, but a male's territory may span that of several females. In the northern hemisphere the mating season is in March, during which both sexes may mate with several partners. The female gives birth to a maximum of six kits during April and May, although a much smaller number than this are likely to survive to dispersal in late July.

Mink
Cal. Academy of Sciences/Gerald and Buff Corsi The mink ( Mustela vison ) is a member of the weasel family, which also includes skunks, otters, and wolverines. They are perhaps best know for their dark brown fur, which turns white at the chin and runs to black at the tips of their tails. They have long, slender torsos atop short legs. Full-grown females are usually 17 to 21 inches long and weigh 1.25 to 1.75 pounds, while full-grown males are usually 21 to 24 inches in length and weigh 2 to 3.75 pounds. Wild minks are less abundant than they were 50 years ago. The quality of their habitat has been degraded through development, stream channelization, and the drainage of wetlands. Trapping and the fur industry have also depleted wild mink populations. An average of 115,000 wild minks were killed in traps each year between 1995 and 1998, even though the mink industry has increasingly turned to raising its animals in cages (26 million caged minks were killed each year between 1995 and 1998). Minks are nocturnal animals, active from dusk to dawn. They do not hibernate during the winter, though they do sometimes stay in their dens for a day or so during snowy or cold periods. Minks travel well on both land and water, swimming as deep as 50 feet under water on one breath and reaching surface speeds of up to 1.5 miles an hour. On land, mink walk or take low bounds of 10-24 inches, which can reach speeds of up to 7.8 miles per hour.

Marauding Minks Claim: 6,500 minks set free by animal rights activists rampaged through the British countryside. Status: True. Origins: An attempt to free minks into the wild before they were turned into fur coats has resulted in a wildlife and domestic animal crisis in Britain. Minks, you see, are killers . . . a fact you might expect animal rights activists would have taken into account before unleashing them on an unsuspecting countryside. What follows is one of the representative news articles about this August 1998 invasion brought on by good intentions gone horribly wrong: In what must have seemed like a brilliant idea at the time, British animal-rights activists sneaked onto the grounds of a mink farm here during the weekend, cut through wire fences and gave 6,500 minks their freedom instead of a future as fur coats. But the illegal act has backfired as few British animal-liberation missions ever have. Released into the rich countryside of England's southern coast, the thousands of minks have gone on a rampage driven by insatiable hunger and equally insatiable mink-like curiosity. Description
The common name mink comes from the Swedish word maenk. Mink are members of the weasel family which includes skunks, otters, fishers, martens and wolverines. The mink has a long narrow body, short legs and a relatively long tail. Its head is flattened and it has a short pointed snout, small eyes and short rounded ears. An adult male may be 30 inches long and weigh up to 3 Ih pounds, and a female is typically two-thirds that size. The mink's coloration varies from brown to almost black, its belly is slightly lighter than its back and flanks, and it may have a white chin and throat. A domestic mink raised on a ranch for the fur industry is normally much larger than a wild mink and the color of its fur ranges from white to black with several unique colors that have been developed by mink ranchers. A mink's pelt has thick underfur for insulation and buoyancy because the animal lives in and near water. However, it does not have webbed feet or a specialized tail as do other semi-aquatic mammals such as beaver, muskrats and otters. A mink has highly developed anal scent glands, which is typical of members of the weasel family. The mink is not as adept at spraying with these glands as are skunks, but the odor of the secretions is just as obnoxious.

Description:
Mink ( Mustela vison ) have a long, thin body and neck, short legs, and a 6-8 inch bushy tail. Male mink generally are larger than females and may exceed two feet in length. The fur is dark brown on the back, blending into a slightly lighter shade on the belly. A distinguishing mink characteristic is the small white patch of fur on the chin of all animals. Mink fur is very soft and lustrous. The dense underfur is protected by oily guard hairs that tend to waterproof the coat. Like other members of the weasel family, such as weasels and skunks, mink possess a pair of anal scent glands. The liquid in these glands has a strong smell and probably is used for communication or defense purposes.
Distribution and Habitat:
Mink are distributed throughout all of New York State and most of the United States and Canada. They occupy a wide variety of wetland habitat types including streams, rivers, lakes, freshwater and saltwater marshes and coastlines. Their population levels are generally higher in those areas of New York with an abundance of these habitat types. Also, as part of this study, wildlife biologists and technicians surveyed streams in central and western New York to determine the presence of mink. Mink tracks were more abundant in the Southern Tier of New York than in the Lake Plains. The reason for this is uncertain and needs further study.

Trapping Permits
In the 2001-2002 license year, an unlimited number of trapping permits will be issued for the Oak Orchard, Tonawanda and John White Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). Permit applications can be obtained weekdays from October 1 to November 30 by appearing in person at the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge Office on Casey Road between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., or by writing the NYSDEC, Bureau of Wildlife, P.O. Box 422, Basom, New York 14013. Trappers who obtain a permit will be required to report their harvest and trapping efforts on each area. The 2001-2002 muskrat and mink seasons at the three WMAs will run from December 1 to February 15. Manipulation of the muskrat population is an important management tool used to promote prime emergent marsh habitats used by waterfowl and uncommon marsh birds such as the black tern and least bittern. The trap limit allows Bureau of Wildlife personnel to better regulate the muskrat harvest according to water availability, habitat needs and population. It will also improve the quality of trapping on the Oak Orchard and Tonawanda Wildlife Management Areas. During the 2000-2001 trapping season, trappers harvested 10,080 muskrats on the two state WMAs. Trapping seasons for fox, raccoon, coyote, and skunk at the Oak Orchard and Tonawanda WMAs will be consistent with the state seasons (October 25 to February 15), however, at the John White WMA, the upland trapping season will run from November 1 to February 15. The later opening date for fox, coyote and raccoon will allow for two Youth Pheasant Hunts on this area prior to the trapping season. Traps set for upland animals will not require numbered tags and they will not be considered in the trap limit.
