Army Reserve Officers Training Corps
Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) is offered by the University and is available to all students. Physically qualified American citizens who complete the entire four-year program are eligible to be commissioned in the U.S. Army. Delayed entry into active service for the purpose of graduate study is available. Military science course work is designed to complement other instruction offered at the University. Emphasis throughout is on the development of individual leadership ability and preparation of the student for future leadership roles in the Army. Professional military education skills in written communications, human behavior, history, mathematical reasoning, and computer literacy are fulfilled through required University Core Curriculum requirements and the military science curriculum. There are three variations of ROTC available:
  • The Four-Year Program: During the four-year program, students participate in required military science courses and activities. Attendance at a six-week advanced training camp is required between the third and fourth years. The eight courses required in this program are listed below.
  • The Two-Year Program: The two-year ROTC program begins with a six-week Camp Challenge summer training session (with pay). After successful completion of Camp Challenge, the student enters the third year of ROTC and attends advanced cam during the next summer. Enlisted members of the Army National Guard or Army Reserves who have completed basic training can qualify for the two-year ROTC Simultaneous Membership Program.

Plan: US general to run Iraq
In Ankara and Washington, the US outlined its plans for a post-Hussein Iraq. Some Iraqi opposition leaders object. By Cameron W. Barr SULAYMANIYAH, IRAQ - The head of the US military's Central Command, Gen. Tommy Franks, will rule Iraq in the initial aftermath of a US invasion to overthrow President Saddam Hussein. Administration officials briefed senators Tuesday on postwar planning, stressing that the US goal is "to liberate Iraq, not to occupy it," and last week a US envoy told leaders of Iraqi groups opposed to Hussein about American intentions. The senators were told that even under good circumstances, it would take two years before the military could fully transfer control to an Iraqi government. As presented, the plan recalls postwar Germany and Japan, where American military occupations paved the way for transfers of power to democratic and constitutionally backed governments. Some Iraqi opposition leaders are already attacking the plan, saying it amounts to a US military rule of Iraq that will favor the existing power structure in the country. Instead of turning Iraq into a beacon of democracy in the Middle East, an ambition articulated by some US policymakers, the opposition leaders say the US plan seems designed to ease the fears of Arabs and Turks unhappy with the prospect of a democratic, federal Iraq.

      General Information
The purpose of the Army ROTC is to prepare students for commissioning as officers in the Active Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard. The overall program is designed to aid students in developing the abilities and attitudes that will make them academically successful and to develop well educated junior officers. The curriculum is divided into two courses: a Basic Course open to all freshmen and sophomores, and an Advanced Course for qualified juniors, seniors, and graduate students. Students who are undecided about pursuing a commission have the option of participating in the Basic Course without incurring a military obligation. Successful completion of the Basic Course (or commensurate training), a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average, and the appropriate medical and physical qualifications are prerequisites for enrollment in the Advanced Course. Successful completion of both courses and the award of a bachelor’s degree constitute the normal progression to gaining a commission as a second lieutenant. Courses are available to both men and women. The overall Army ROTC curriculum prepares students to become effective leaders and managers in a variety of responsible and challenging commissioned officer fields, thus facilitating early middle-management career development and progression. A description of the course requirements and associated programs is outlined in the following paragraphs.

General Wesley K. Clark became the Supreme Allied Commander Europe on 11 July 1997. He is also the Commander-in-Chief, United States European Command. General Clark's last assignment was as Commander-in-Chief, United States Southern Command, Panama, from June 1996 to July 1997, where he commanded all U.S. forces and was responsible for the direction of most U.S. military activities and interests in Latin America and the Caribbean. His previous assignment was as the Director, Strategic Plans and Policy, J5, the Joint Staff (April 1994-June 1996) where he was the staff officer responsible for world-wide politico-military affairs and U.S. military strategic planning. He also led the military negotiations for the Bosnian Peace Accords at Dayton. General Clark is an Armor Officer who has commanded at every level from Company to Division. As the Commander 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas (August 1992-April 1994), he transitioned the Division into a rapidly deployable force and conducted three emergency deployments to Kuwait. During the Cold War, he commanded the 3rd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division (April 1986-March 1988), and the 1st Battalion, 77th Armor, 4th Infantry Division (February 1980-June 1982) at Fort Carson, Colorado. As the Commander of National Training Center (October 1989-October 1991), General Clark helped train many of the forces that subsequently saw combat operations in Desert Storm. During this time period, he developed new training methodologies for Division and Corps level training, helping to train 13 Divisions, and he conducted the first ever Corps level BCTP training exercise. In his first assignment at the National Training Center, as Commander Operations Group (August 1984-January 1986), he revised the overall training program by improving scenarios, enhancing After Action Reports, and developing the first Brigade-level training exercise and the first heavy-light rotations.

    Department of MILITARY SCIENCE
    College of Arts and Sciences
Professor: Lieutenant Colonel James E. Waldo; Assistant Professors: Brown, Clegg, Lovins, Storey; Instructors: Hightower, Powell, Roper The military science department's Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program of instruction qualifies the student for a commission in the United States Army, Army National Guard, or United States Army Reserve. The curriculum does not provide technical training in a job specialty nor does it emphasize vocational training; rather, it complements and provides a base for normal progression in the commissioned officers' educational program. Leadership and management objectives are included in academic periods of instruction. Practical leadership experience is gained in a field training environment by attendance at a 32-day summer camp, normally between the junior and senior years. Nursing students attend a nursing internship at Army hospitals following the normal summer camp. A leadership laboratory also provides experience in a range of leadership positions during the school year. The department offers both a four-year and a two-year program, each with its own special advantages. Students are invited to visit or write the Department of Military Science to obtain additional information.
