Army Training Opportunities - Most of these school opportunities take place during the summer months, when students are not attending classes. This training give cadets superior hands-on experience with real Army training and instruction. Students who complete these programs are proud to attach these accomplishments to their resumes and find they continue to benefit from these experiences throughout their careers. Airborne School - Airborne School is taught in Fort Benning, Georgia, and is a course comprised of three weeks of training. In the first week, "ground week", students are physically conditioned and taught the basics of parachuting. In the second week, "tower week", students try their first jumps off a tower to practice parachute landing falls, or "PLFs". Week three is the opportunity for students to make jumps of their own out of a low-flying Lockheed C-130 Hercules or a Lockheed C-141 Starlifter aircraft. Cadets compete for slots through an Order of Merit list (OML) based on their participation, APFT score, academic standing and instructor assessment. Air Assault School - A ten-day school situated in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, or Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, Air Assault School teaches candidates about preparing combat loads for transportation by air as well as insertion techniques like fast-rope rappelling from helicopters. Cadets compete for slots through an Order of Merit list (OML) based on their participation, APFT score, academic standing and instructor assessment.

PALO ALTO MILITARY ACADEMY 1919 - 1972 Building on Manzanita Hall's fine academic reputation, Colonel Kelly created Palo Alto Military Academy as a non-sectarian, though admittedly Christian, boarding and day school. In the second academic year, the former high school program was discontinued and the enrollment limited to boys ages 5-15, in grades one through eight. The Academy continued to prosper throughout the 1930's and 1940's for day and boarding students, building onto the seven-acre campus to support the apparently growing enrollment. Grade 9 was added ca. 1937. The daily program for the cadets was structured, starting the day with reveille and ending with taps, with even the youngest boys participating in all the military formations. The academic program emphasized arithmetic, language, spelling, and writing. The boys recited and memorized a poem, proverb, or quotation of they chose for the weekly public speaking assignments. The winning quotations were published in the yearly general brochures, which we have in our archives. The Academy was in session year round, offering an optional summer program, which consisted of an six-week "coaching program" with morning classes in Palo Alto, and a six-week recreational camp, Camp Eldorado at Lake Alpine in the Sierras. There is a single summer brochure from 1930 indicating that the recreation camp was held at Camp Discovery in Sonoma County.

Each year, over 800 special training opportunities are extended to cadets through the Cadet Professional Development Training (CPDT) program. The CPDT program supplements campus training with practical leader development experiences and some additional skill identifier awarding courses. Cadets train in Army schools and with Active and Reserve units. CPDT consists of two subprograms, Cadet Troop Leader Training (CTLT) and Cadet Practical Field Training (CPFT). In a typical year, about half our commissionees will have had at least one of these experiences. Cadet Practical Field Training (CPFT) Generally, the total number of CPFT allocations equals ten percent of the cadet population at large. Battalion commanders will prepare, select and send cadets with the highest potential for completing the CPFT training and for being commissioned. Cadet Command pays for travel. Billeting and mess are provided by the installation. All cadets must meet the eligibility criteria to be selected. Camp Challenge Summer Training Location: Fort Knox, Kentucky
