Welcome to the home of the skeptical, irascible, doubting, iconoclastic Captain Critical, aka Captain Barb, whose pontificating will try to amuse, bemuse, irritate and generally annoy anyone bold enough to stay long enough to read the ramblings of a self appointed distaff critic who will continue to remind you that women are veterans too!
Did you know that there are almost two million women veterans? From the American Revolution to Panama, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq , women have served in some way in every conflict. Not that they were legal in the early days. History tells us that thirty three thousand women served in World War One and almost 500,000 took part in World War Two. During the Korean era 120,000 women were in uniform and seven thousand were deployed in theater during Viet Nam. During Desert Storm seven per cent of the total U.S. forces deployed were women - over forty thousand of them. On these pages you will find the history and accomplishments of those women who have served this country - voluntarily - since it's beginning.

U.S. Military's Anti-Prostitution Campaign Makes Headway in S.Korea By Kim Hyung-jin
SEOUL, Jan. 31 (Yonhap) On a recent Saturday night, a scantily-clad South Korean bar lady was speaking to several young American soldiers on "Hooker Hill," an infamous red-light district in Itaewon near the U.S. military command in Seoul.
After a brief hesitation, the soldiers quickly left the spot, as U.S. military police patrols were coming down the hill. That was an easily spotted scene that night at a once-popular destination of U.S. troops outside of their base.
The U.S. crackdown on off-base night spot areas, such as Hooker Hill, only half a mile away from the Yongsan Garrison, has been intensified in recent months, coinciding with the South Korean enforcement of a tougher anti-prostitution law in September.
The crackdown has drawn howls of complaints from Korean nightspots whose main customers are U.S. soldiers. Currently, 32,500 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea.
"We sold only six bottles of beer on Christmas Eve. We couldn't pay rent for the past six months," said a bar woman who wanted to be identified by her alias, Song Jin-sook.

Fred Foldvary on Law Enforcement
The Federalized Militarized Police
by Fred E. Foldvary, Senior Editor
There are two disturbing trends in law enforcement. First, the US military is being used for domestic law enforcement, contrary to law. Secondly, the federal government is taking over the financing, training, and direction of local police, removing the police from local control. The result is that the federalized police have increasingly turned to violent tactics and assaults on people who have not committed any crimes. Traditionally, the United States has had civilian control of governments at all levels. The 1878 Posse Comitatus Act made it illegal for the US military to act as a domestic police. But the trend now is towards the militarization of law enforcement. The slaughter at Waco was a prime example. The US military is increasingly involved in domestic law enforcement. The Posse Comitatus Act was amended in 1981 to allow some military involvement in law enforcement. A 1991 amendment provided for military training of the police in drug-law enforcement. In 1996, Joint Task Force 6, under the control of the Department of Defense, was expanded to cover the entire USA. In 1997, the first US Citizen was shot and killed by JTF-6 troops. (See the web site by Common Sense for Drug Policy domestic military involvement Under the 1981 "Military Cooperation with Law-Enforcement Officials Act," the US Department of Defense is supplying the local police with paramilitary training and equipment, especially for SWAT teams, for use against civilians. July 22, 2002 The Honorable Jim Langevin
Special Order Commending the Troops at U.S. Naval Base Guantanamo Bay
U.S. Naval Base Guantanamo Bay is over 45 square miles and is not only the oldest U.S. base overseas but it is also the only one in a Communist country. It is located on the southeast corner of Cuba, and is about 400 air miles from Miami, Florida. For these Guard members it is home because it is where their country needs them to be. They are an integral part of the 1,700 members of Joint Task Force-160, made up of servicemen and women from the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard, and they are all unsung heroes of the war on terrorism. The 43rd Military Police is a mobilized National Guard unit from my hometown of Warwick, Rhode Island. They recently made history when, on May 20, 2002, they became the first National Guard unit to assume the role of a joint task force command. Clearly this demonstrates the ability of the National Guard to seamlessly transition into an active duty command. This complete integration of a National Guard Unit into a Joint Task Force is a tribute to both the National Guard Bureau and the U.S. Army. A member of my staff recently had the privilege of visiting these Guard members at Guantanamo. He told me that it was impossible not to be struck by the professionalism and dedication of these men and women. Their morale is excellent, despite the incredibly stressful task they have. They make every daily decision, which affects the lives of 1,700 troops and 564 detainees, and they are our next-door neighbors. They are accomplishing something they have constantly prepared for but never imagined would become reality in this way. They have been assigned an awesome challenge and have risen to the occasion.
