US POLICE HELP TRAIN IRAQI POLICE
J. Grant Swank, Jr.
It’s a major cooperative effort. It’s police from the United States training Iraqi’s newly formed police force.
For instance, US military police from the 42nd Military Police Brigade in Fort Lewis, Washington, are on site there in Baghdad at the police headquarters and stations. That’s according to Major Curtis M. Schroeder, Iraq police Service liaison, 42nd MP Brigade.
US Army Spc. Mary Rose reports for the Multi-National Corps/Iraq that "Fort Lewis soldiers help Iraqi police streamline law and order."
Efficiency levels in particular have increased. Morale as heightened. It’s a matter of buddying up to help protect Iraqi citizens while planting a democracy in the New Iraq. While the National Assembly proceeds with its elections and deliberations, the locals must be kept safe. That’s up to the Iraqi police. In that security tightening are American military police sharing their expertise.
"’We are teaching and coaching the (Iraqi) leaders to delegate authority and use their staff efficiently and showing them how to train their own troops,’ Maj. Curtis M. Schroeder said from Camp Victory, Iraq.

U.S. military prisoner abuse inquiries
At least eight U.S. military investigations into prisoner abuses have been held, are underway or are planned. Of the reports released so far, none has implicated senior U.S. officials in the abuse scandal, other than to say they failed to provide leadership and created conditions that allowed the abuse to occur.

British Ex-Gitmo Detainee Says U.S. Military Police Beat Him
By Patrick E. Tyler The New York Times LONDON One of the British detainees released from Guantanamo Bay has charged that he was brutally beaten by the U.S. military police, and that he and his fellow captives were subjected to mistreatment and humiliation. Separately on Thursday, a reporter for The Times of London, Tim Reid, wrote that he had met Udeen in a Kandahar jail, where fleeing Taliban forces had left him in early January 2002. Reid wrote that Udeen said he had been arrested by the Taliban, during a journey across Afghanistan to Iran, because he carried a British passport. This story was published on Friday, March 12, 2004.

Sturkol, USAF (Click photo for screen-resolution image); high-resolution image available. Soldiers in the detachment come from all over, and are deployed for at least a year. Some hail from Fort Richardson and Fort Wainwright, Alaska, while others come from Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, and the Florida National Guard. Some of the soldiers come in to support from forward operating bases in Afghanistan. The MP detachment has a good working relationship with security members from other services. On the air base, Air Force security forces work flight line security, so the MPs often coordinate protection areas with the Air Force security through the base defense operations center. And within the detachment are two military working dog handlers from the Navy: Petty Officer 1st Class Patrick Yourg and Petty Officer 2nd Class Brian Thomas. Whether it means doing customs for redeploying personnel, cruising on patrol by car or on foot, or ensuring the people and vehicles coming through the main gate are free of items that could cause harm, the MPs of K-2 will continue to do their job to the best of their ability, said military policeman Army Sgt. Patrick Conesa.

NAVAL STATION GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba, March 24, 2005 He was promoted to lieutenant colonel the very next day and got to work building the 525th Military Police Battalion from the ground up. For now, the 525th consists of two company-sized elements, a headquarters detachment and the 189th MP Company. The detachment consists of all the elements normally associated with a separate brigade or battalion headquarters: staff officers, medical experts, engineers, legal staff and other support specialists. The 189th is providing guards for at least two individual detainee camps, including Camp 5, where high-value and high-risk detainees are housed, and Camp Echo, where detainees awaiting trial by military commission are held. (Printing) U.S. military spending ($343 billion in the year 2000) is 69 percent greater than that of the next five highest nations combined. Russia, which has the second largest military budget, spends less than one-sixth what the United States does. Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Cuba, Sudan, Iran, and Syria spend $14.4 billion combined; Iran accounts for 52 percent of this total.
The following is a partial list of U.S. military interventions from 1890 to 1999. This guide does NOT include demonstration duty by military police, mobilizations of the National Guard, offshore shows of naval strength, reinforcements of embassy personnel, the use of non-Defense Department personnel (such as the Drug Enforcement Agency), military exercises, non-combat mobilizations (such as replacing postal strikers), the permanent stationing of armed forces, covert actions where the U.S. did not play a command and control role, the use of small hostage rescue units, most uses of proxy troops, U.S. piloting of foreign warplanes, foreign disaster assistance, military training and advisory programs not involving direct combat, civic action programs, and many other military activities.

An anonymous note slipped under a superior's door by a part-time soldier from Pennsylvania triggered the Iraq prison abuse scandal now engulfing the US military and administration. The act eventually catapulted the name of Joseph Darby, a 24-year-old reservist in the 372nd Military Police Company, from comfortable obscurity to the floor of Congress where he was praised today by Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld for his "honourable" conduct. Darby's act ironically led to the deluge of Democratic calls for Rumsfeld to resign. An article in New Yorker magazine this week identified Darby as the soldier who sounded the alarm over the treatment of Iraqi detainees in Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison. According to the transcript - obtained by the magazine - of a military hearing in April, an army Criminal Investigation Agent, Scott Bobeck, said a fellow soldier had given Darby a compact disc with images of naked detainees being mistreated. Outraged by what he saw, Darby "initially put a letter under our door," said Bobeck.
