Eden Nathan Zaada, 19, was an IDF deserter from Rishon Lezion, who recently moved to the West Bank settlement of Tapuah. Wearing an IDF uniform, he opened fire on passengers on a bus in the Israeli Arab town of Shfaram on Thursday afternoon (August 4, 2005), killing four people and wounding 12. The terrorist was killed by a mob that boarded the bus after the shooting. The victims of the attack were identified as bus driver Michel Bahus, 56; passengers Nader Hayak, 55, Hazar Turki, 23, and her 21-year-old sister, Dina. (Communicated by the Prime Minister’s Media Adviser) Prime Minister Ariel Sharon this evening (Thursday, 4 August 2005) released the following statement following the terrorist attack in Shfaram: “This was a reprehensible act by a bloodthirsty Jewish terrorist who sought to attack innocent Israeli citizens. This terrorist event was a deliberate attempt to harm the fabric of relations among all Israeli citizens. "Terrorism by civilians against civilians is the most dangerous thing affecting the future of the State of Israel and its stability as a democracy. On my behalf and that of the government, I send condolences to the families of those who were murdered and my best wishes for a quick recovery to those who were wounded. The entire State of Israel, regardless of race, religion or sex, strongly condemns this act of terrorism.

Insurgents gun down security chiefs
Nicolas Rothwell, Middle East correspondent
May 13, 2005 AS fighting continued in the far west of Iraq, and efforts to draft the country's new constitution began, insurgents stepped up their bid to keep the country in chaos yesterday, targeting military and police leaders in Baghdad.
A senior army general, Iyad Imad Mehdi, and a prominent police chief, Jamal Ahmed Hussein, were killed when they were gunned down in separate attacks in the capital as reports of clashes between US forces and rebel formations in remote Anbar province emerged. US sources denied claims by an Iraqi government representative in the border town of Al Qaim that two US helicopters had been shot down. Violence aimed at broader targets also flared in Baghdad. A car bomb exploded near a busy market and cinema in the east of the city, killing at least 17 people and wounding 65, police said. The explosion of the parked car also set fire to a nearby apartment building and about 15 parked vehicles in the Jadida district.

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) Nigerian police routinely torture and shoot suspects and rape female prisoners to get them to confess to crimes, a U.S.-based human rights group said Wednesday, prompting sharp denials from officials in the African country. Human Rights Watch said in a report that police routinely hang detainees by their hands and legs from ceilings and beat them with metal or wooden objects. Police have also been known to shoot detainees in the foot or leg and apply electric shocks to male genitalia, the New York-based group said. The aim of the torture was typically to force prisoners to sign confessions, according to the report. It also said local organizations received frequent reports of rape by police. Nigeria's government denied the accusations, saying all reported abuses are thoroughly investigated and security forces are being reformed to improve respect for human rights.
