The main list is a very long HTML file of nearly 300 museums and museum-ships in the UK or Ireland. It is within a few minutes walk from the State Capital, The California State Railroad Museum and several other fine museums, parks, and tourist attractions. The museum, opened by Governor Pete Wilson in 1991, is the official military museum and historical research center of the State of California. This was reinforced on 11 September 2002 when Governor Gray Davis signed legislation making the museum a permanent museum under the California State Military Department and providing permanent funding for the museum. Finally on 13 July 2004, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation to amend the Government Code to make the museum the state's official military museum. WELCOME TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MILITARY HISTORY JOHANNESBURG GAUTENG VISIT THE FOLLOWING PAGES AS WELL NEWS AND ACTIVITIES ABOUT THE MUSEUM The South African National Museum of Military History, situated in Johannesburg in the Province of Gauteng, is the only museum of its kind in South Africa. It provides a nucleus of Museum and military history expertise in southern Africa. During the First World War (1914 - 1918) many of the belligerent nations went to great lengths to collect and preserve the role of their soldiers during that conflict. At the conclusion of the war, Britain established by statute the Imperial War Museum as a memorial to the effort and sacrifice made by the men and women of the Empire during the war. South Africa had played a role during that war on the side of the Allies. However, the state neglected to preserve a record of this role in the form of a museum and, unfortunately, much of the material heritage relating to this period was dispersed. This failure was recognized because in 1940, shortly after South Africa's entry in to the Second World War (1939 - 1945) Capt J Agar-Hamilton was appointed official historian of the Union Defence Forces. Capt Agar-Hamilton then formed an Historical Research Committee to ensure the preservation of documents and materials of military interest, therefore laying the foundation for the eventual establishment of a museum. The state also took the decision to create an official war art programme and, throughout the war, seven official war artists were appointed to the battlefronts where South Africans served. Together they produced a collection of around 850 works of art which also serve as an important source of reference to the country's role in the war.

The exhibition rooms have been arranged to represent military, civil, and wartime aviation. There are guns, uniforms, photos, facts, stories, and recovered aircraft parts, just to start. The site for the museum is perfect because the building is near the present day airfield and was constructed as part of the Fleet Air Arm (FAA) station in 1944. Location Located just to the right of Ronaldsway Airport in the south of the island, between Ballasalla and Castletown. The one-storey white building is marked with an aeroplane propeller on the side. By Vehicle: Travel to the airport along the A5, where it is located between Ballasalla and Castletown. The Museum has its own entrance to the right of the airport. By Bus: The airport can be reached by the following bus routes: 1, 1C, 2, 2A, and 8. Travelling from Douglas, Port Erin, Port St. Mary and Peel. It is then just a short walk to the museum.
