Relive 150 years of military history and touch the lives of local heroes and unknown enemies. The North Louisiana Military Museum in Ruston, Louisiana is the newest addition to the Secretary of State's museums division. It contains a collection unique to this area, the museum chronicles our conflicts from the Spanish American War, Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Dessert Storm, and today's war on terror. The most voluminous part of the collection is, of course, weapons, from swords and muskets to heavy machine guns. Artillery pieces are displayed on the grounds. All weapons are deactivated for safety. The human story, however, is the best told through diaries, Bibles, medals, and kits of personal items. A young man donated his father's flight jacket; it was the only item that was returned when the pilot was reported lost in Vietnam. The enemy's human dimension is also evident, for example, through a German mother's medal awarded to her for bearing many sons for the fatherland. Commentators have said of the museum," . . . (it is) equal to any I have ever visited" and "it honors heroes in our midst," and "this is a must-see attraction for anyone passing through north Louisiana."

'Rosie The Riveter' visits Ruston
(4-29-05) - Louisiana Tech ROTC Cadets gave a saber salute as the bus carrying World War II veterans and graduates of the Selman Field Navigation School arrived at the North Louisiana Military Museum Friday afternoon. North Louisiana Military Museum Curator and Vietnam War veteran Ernie Stephens escorted Ethel Kelly, also known as Rosie the Riveter, to see the museum display honoring the women who filled industrial jobs during World War II. In that display is an original WWII Rosie the Riveter poster and other artifacts honoring female civilian "homefront" workers. Ethel Kelley, also known as Rosie the Riveter, is seated between several of the two dozen World War II veterans who traveled to Ruston to view the North Louisiana Military Museum and be honored for their military and civilian service to America. Rosie The Riveter was created during World War II as a symbol and icon to honor the women who filled industrial jobs and worked in shipyards during World War II so the men could join the military and fight. Two dozen World War II veterans and civilian workers, including Rosie the Riveter, came to Ruston Friday afternoon to see the North Louisiana Military Museum and be honored for their service to America.
