Chronological List of United States Expansion History of Territorial Expansion The original territory of the United States, as defined by the treaties of November 30, 1782, and September 3, 1783, with Great Britain, was bounded on the north by Canada, on the south by the Spanish Colonies of East and West Florida, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the west by the Mississippi River. It included the Thirteen Original Colonies and the areas claimed by them.
The September 3, 1783 Treaty of Paris ratifies the independence of the 13 North American states.

The laying of the trans-Pacific cable, which passed through the islands, brought the first residents in 1903. Between 1935 and 1947, Midway was used as a refueling stop for trans-Pacific flights. The US naval victory over a Japanese fleet off Midway in 1942 was one of the turning points of World War II. The islands continued to serve as a naval station until closed in 1993. Today the islands are a wildlife refuge open to the public. This standard provides names, abbreviations and codes for representing the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and the outlying areas of the United States. Source. Federal Information Processing Standards Publication (FIPS Pub) 5-1. Relationship. Counties and County Equivalents (GEO-00201); Named Populated Places, Primary County Divisions, and Other Locational Entities of the United States (GEO-00202); Metropolitan Statistical Area (GEO-00203). FDA Specifications. United States, the District of Columbia, and the outlying areas of the United States are represented by a two (2) digit number, right justified with leading zero. CDER Specifications. a) FIPS designates a two-digit numeric code for each state and the District of Columbia, instead of using a U.S. Postal Service two-letter abbreviation. Since CDER uses the data in this field to address correspondence, and since the two-digit numeric code is not recognized by the U.S. Postal Service, it was felt that we needed to deviate from FIPS in this regard, and solely employ the U.S. Postal Service two letter abbreviation. It was decided that FIPS codes would be specified in this standard monograph as a cross-reference to enable data conversion from non-CDER components.
