GENERAL INFORMATION ON WEST ASIA (Middle East) The Persian Gulf War 1991-present U.S. Sponsored Dictatorship in Iran: 1953-1979 In 1953, the CIA sponsored the overthrow of the democratically-elected Mossadeq government in Iran. The Mossadeq government was seen as threatening to U.S. economic interests because it had nationalized the British oil company. In response, the U.S. installed the Shah, Mohammed Raza Pahlevi, as a puppet leader who the U.S could easily control. As a result of the brutal coup, 70,000 Iranians were killed between 1952-1979. In the late seventies, Iranians begin massive demonstrations against the Shah and while the U.S. attempts to protect the Shah's regime with military force, the Shah is eventually overthrown by Ayatollah Khomeni. Iran-Iraq War 1980-1988 Since August 1990, Iraq has been under U.S. led economic sanctions. These sanctions prevent Iraq from obtaining the food and medicines that people desperately need. The impact of economic sanction on Iraq has been devastating:
  • 1.5 million people in Iraq, over half of them children under five, have died as a direct result of sanctions.

    May 3, 2002
Statement by Ambassador James B. Cunningham, Deputy U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, on the Situation in the Middle East, in the Security Council, May 3, 2002
    Thank you, Mr. President,
Many of those who have spoken today have discussed Resolution 1405
    Mr. President,
We have also heard invoked other recent Council actions on the Middle East. As you will recall, Secretary Powell embarked on his April mission to the Middle East with a mandate from President Bush to pursue implementation of Resolution 1402 . 1402 calls upon both parties to move immediately to a meaningful cease-fire, calls for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Palestinian cities, including Ramallah, and demands an immediate cessation of all acts of violence, including acts of terror, provocation, incitement and destruction. No one should be surprised that it has taken time and hard work, but we have seen significant progress in recent days. Most notable is the peaceful resolution of the situation in Ramallah, in part thanks to the hard work of the United States. Yet here in New York one would hardly know anything positive had occurred this week. The reality is that there has been significant movement toward implementation of Council resolutions by the parties, with the help of many international actors. We welcome these positive developments.

The Research Process : This guide features major sources of information for Middle East Studies that are available from Western Libraries and the Internet. Both primary and secondary sources could be important. Gathering and interpreting facts from primary sources will lead to patterns of evidence and finally to the argument or thesis of the research essay. Secondary sources, written after the time period of the event, interpret facts and events. Bibliographies in secondary sources often list primary sources. Both are essential. Please contact the reference staff in The D.B. Weldon Library for assistance with any of your research needs.

    Books Using the Library Catalogue
Search the Library Catalogue for the books found in bibliographies of encyclopedias and dictionary articles noting the subject headings; then search these subject headings to find additional books. Listed in this section are sample subject headings used for Middle East Studies. Also remember that the keyword function in the catalogue and the limit options are powerful tools.

The size of government consumption relative to national output is examined to see if it is optimal in five Gulf countries of the Middle East. We follow the methodology suggested in Barro (1990) and Karras (1996, 1997) and examine the marginal productivity of government consumption. The "Barro rule" states that government services are optimally provided when the marginal product of government consumption is one. Regression tests are undertaken for each country, and then in panels created by pooling data from all countries. Results reveal that government consumption is productive, but the size of government is too large to be optimal. Download Info To our knowledge, this item is not available for download

A gang is a group of men under the command of a leader, bound by a compact of association, in which the plunder is divided according to an agreed convention. Yesterday, we remembered the innocent lives taken that terrible morning. Today, we turn to the urgent duty of protecting other lives, without illusion and without fear. We've accomplished much in the last year in Afghanistan and beyond. We have much yet to do in Afghanistan and beyond. 11:00 A.M. EDT PRESIDENT BUSH: Mr. Secretary General, Mr. President, distinguished delegates, ladies and gentlemen: Thank you for the honor of addressing this General Assembly. The American people respect the idealism that gave life to this organization. And we respect the men and women of the U.N., who stand for peace and human rights in every part of the world. Welcome to New York City, and welcome to the United States of America. During the past three years, I've addressed this General Assembly in a time of tragedy for my country, and in times of decision for all of us. Now we gather at a time of tremendous opportunity for the U.N. and for all peaceful nations. For decades, the circle of liberty and security and development has been expanding in our world. This progress has brought unity to Europe, self-government to Latin America and Asia, and new hope to Africa. Now we have the historic chance to widen the circle even further, to fight radicalism and terror with justice and dignity, to achieve a true peace, founded on human freedom.

Ms. Townsley directed the delegates to the Resolution "Bringing Justice and Peace to The Middle East" and, on behalf of Committee Six, moved its adoption. Rev. Sharon K. She shared observations from her trip and urged passage of this Resolution. Rev. United States, Russian Federation Only Realistic Hope for Ending Current Violence
After confirmation by the Palestine Legislative Council of Palestine Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) and his government, the Quartet would present the Road Map to the Government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority, after which the parties, with the full support of the Quartet and the entire international community, would have to take the painful steps necessary to end the current cycle of violence.  The path to peace along the Road Map would be difficult and strewn with obstacles, but the alternative was a continued cycle of violence and economic and social dislocation.
The Palestinian Authority must bring those involved in planning and carrying out such attacks to justice, and the groups responsible should immediately cease all forms of violence. During March, some 103 Palestinians had been killed, marking the highest Palestinian monthly death toll in the last 12 months.  On three occasions, the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) had carried out extrajudicial killings of alleged terrorists in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.  On 11 April, a British peace activist had been shot in the head by IDF gunfire, the third such incident in the last four weeks.  He called on the Israeli authorities to abandon the use of excessive force in densely populated areas and to protect the safety of civilians and to desist immediately from such provocative acts as extrajudicial killings.  Although Israel had a right to self-defence, it must exercise that right within the boundaries of international law.

GENERAL DEBATE CONTINUES IN ASSEMBLY; EAST TIMOR, MIDDLE EAST PEACE, SECURITY COUNCIL REFORM AMONG TOPICS RAISED
The arrival at the current position in East Timor was due to President B.J. Habibie of Indonesia, who had allowed the people of East Timor to choose between greater autonomy within Indonesia and independence, Alexander Downer, the Foreign Minister of Australia, told the General Assembly this morning as it resumed its general debate on its seventh day following the conclusion of its two-day twenty-second special session on Small Island Developing States on Monday and Tuesday. He said that the fact that more than 98.6 per cent of the 450,000 East Timorese who were able to register to vote did so, was a tribute to their courage and thirst for democracy. It was also a tribute to the effectiveness of the United Nations Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) a fine example of how effective the Organization could be in situations of conflict and transition. However, the several local employees of the Mission who paid for their dedication with their lives, was a stark reminder of the great personal cost associated with missions, and a further reminder of the need to make the security and personal safety of the Organization's staff an urgent priority. He said elements of the 3,200-strong international Force in East Timor (INTERFET) were now spreading across East Timorese territory and had begun to bring peace back to the island while assisting in creating the right climate for the provision of food, shelter and medical assistance. UNAMET personnel had returned to East Timor and there was now an urgent need to move as soon as possible to Phase III of the United Nations Plan for East Timor. That would require all parties, especially Indonesia and Portugal, to work closely with the Secretariat.
