Inside the mummy: archaeology meets technology to reveal an ancient Egyptian workman's blunder, 2,800 years after the event Middle East, The August, 2004 EGYPTIAN MUMMIES contain a wealth of information about the past but until now to discover their contents, they had to be unwrapped. The process is irreversible; therefore unwrapping a mummy to discover its secrets meant destroying it for good, presenting Egyptologists with a terrible dilemma. The British Museum in London houses nearly 100 mummies and is a leading centre for research on all aspects of Ancient Egypt. Outside Cairo it boasts the most comprehensive collection of Egyptian Antiquities anywhere in the world.

Ancient Near East
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Overview map of the Ancient Near East The term Ancient Near East or Ancient Orient encompasses the early civilizations predating Classical Antiquity in the region roughly corresponding to that described by the modern term Middle East Egypt , the Fertile Crescent Anatolia ), during the time roughly spanning the Bronze Age from the rise of Sumer and Gerzeh in the 4th millennium BC to the expansion of the Persian Empire in the 6th century BC . As such, it is a term widely employed in the fields of Near Eastern archaeology Ancient History and Egyptology The Ancient Near East is generally understood as encompassing Mesopotamia (modern Iraq and Syria Persia Iran Egypt , the Levant Israel Jordan Lebanon ... Palestinian Authority ), and Anatolia Turkey ). Some users of the term would extend its application into the Caucasus region, into modern Afghanistan (see Bactria Indus Valley Civilization Minoan and Mycenaean Greece and other peripheral areas. Still others would exclude Egypt from the Ancient Near East as a geographically and culturally distinct area. However, because of Egypt's intimate involvement with the region, especially from the 2nd millennium BC , this exclusion is rare.

Welcome to Classics and Ancient History
By Classics we mean the study of Latin and Ancient Greek languages and literature. By Ancient History we mean the literature, history, art and archaeology of the ancient Greek and Roman civilisations, and their contributions to the modern world. Study of these subjects is important in gaining an understanding of the origins and nature of Western culture, as well as imparting useful research and linguistic skills. A degree which includes units in Classics or Ancient History is a very acceptable tertiary qualification for entry into many professions such as secondary and tertiary teaching, the diplomatic service, librarianship and administrative careers in the public service and industry.
