Not Grounded in Fact
by Jacob Lassner
Facts on the Ground: Archaeological Practice and Territorial Self-Fashioning in Israeli Society. By Nadia Abu el-Haj. University of Chicago Press, 2001. 352 pp. $52 ($20, paper). The peoples of the Middle East have long waged battles to co-opt history. Since ancient times, communal polities, ranging from small tribal configurations to vast empires, and from closely knit ethnic groups to more inclusive modern nations, have turned to the past to legitimize the present. Abu el-Haj, an anthropologist at Barnard College of Columbia University, explores in this interesting study how archeology has shaped the social and political imagination of Israel and served the aims of the state. The blurb on the back cover of the book by Talal Asad, another anthropologist, succinctly captures Abu el-Haj's project: "She presents the first critical account of Israeli archeological practice while tracing the dynamic relationships among science, colonization, nation-state building, and territorial expansion."

Archaeology
Archaeology is the study of the human past. Its initial objective is the construction of cultural chronology. Its intermediate objective is the reconstruction of past lifeways. Its ultimate objective is the discovery of the processes which underlie and condition human behavior. Archaeology (and alternately Archeology) is a science well suited for anyone who enjoys biology, botany, geology, chemistry, history, psychology, art, and solving a great puzzle. It is not looting and robbing. Various countries have enacted laws and regulations to ensure that their legacies are not exported or destroyed. There are acts which intend to repatriate looted legacies. In the United States of America, many state governments are sensitive to the need for archaeological study and excavation when any development project state-sponsored or commercial uncovers evidence of historical human presence.

About the Behistun Inscription, the "Rosetta Stone" of Cuneiform
::: The Behistun Inscription (also Bisutun or Bisistun) is to cuneiform what the Rosetta Stone is to Egyptian hieroglyphs: the document most crucial in the decipherment of a previously lost script. The inscription is approximately 15 metres high by 25 metres wide, and 100 metres up a cliff from an ancient road connecting the capitals of Babylonia and Media (Babylon and Ecbatana). It is extremely inaccessible as the mountainside was removed to make the inscription more visible after its completion. The text itself is a statement by Darius I of Persia, written three times in three different scripts and languages
Arabic Alphabet History and Structure
::: The Arabic alphabet is the principal script used for writing the Arabic language. It is the alphabet of the language of the Quran, the holy book of Islam. The alphabet s influence spread with that of Islam and it has been, and still is, used to write other languages without any linguistic roots in Arabic, such as Persian and Urdu.
Mesopotamia - a brief introduction
::: Writings from Mesopotamia (Uruk) are the earliest written work in the world, giving Mesopotamia the reputation of being the cradle of civilization. Mesopotamia was settled by, and conquered by, numerous ancient civilizations, including Sumer, Akkad, Babylon and Assyria. Peoples who threatened or invaded these lands include the Hittites, the Elam and the Persian Empire. These civilizations arose from earlier settlements and cultures which were among the first to make use of agriculture.

Mission Statement The Middle East landscape bears the imprint of thousands of years of human activities. These activities include the excavation of canals, the creation and cultivation of fields, the movement of caravans, excavation of materials for building construction, and the extraction of metallic minerals. At CAMEL we aim to analyze and understand this landscape by combining both traditional on-the-ground archaeological surveys with remote-sensing methods such as satellite imagery and air photo analysis. In addition our research methods include geoarchaeological studies of buried landscapes and environmental change, and the use of texts to provide information of human use of the land. Although much of our work does entail the reconstruction of demographic histories and economic landscapes, we are also seeking an understanding of the various ways in which people related to their landscape. An extension of the CAMEL approach to landscape is a modeling program which is trying to show how a Bronze Age Near Eastern Society provisioned itself with food, and how in the long term such strategies might have varied according to fluctuations in climate. Such modeling techniques, that harness the capabilities of GIS with powerful crop and demographic models, are currently being developed as a CAMEL-related project in conjunction with the DIS laboratory at the Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, Illinois.

993 Archaeological Site Photographs: Mesopotamia (414); Egypt (579).
Archaeological research at the Oriental Institute falls into several categories: 1) on-going field projects that involve excavations, regional surveys and environmental studies, and preliminary publication; 2) analysis and publication of recently completed field projects; 3) special studies of published or unpublished data from previous expeditions; and 4) broadly synthetic interpretative studies based on ancient Near Eastern archaeological, philological, and historical literature. In general, research in the first two categories is collaborative, involving members of the faculty, research staff, and graduate students, often including collaborators from other institutions as well. These projects require specialists in archaeozoology, art history, environmental studies, ethnobotany, epigraphy, geomorphology, materials science, and remote sensing. Some of these specialities are represented on the Institute staff (epigraphy, geomorphology, remote sensing) and the others are recruited from other institutions. Research in third and fourth categories is usually the product of individual scholarship, either dissertation research under the supervision of a faculty member or post doctoral research by a member of the faculty, staff, former graduate students, or scholars from other institutions.
