Science IMPORTANT New Structure for the Ancient History Sourcebook Since January 24 1999, the Internet Ancient History Sourcebook has been completely reorganized. Each of the main sections had became too large to maintain as one file. To see the new arrangement go to the Main Index The three older index files were called Ancient Near East Greece Rome (asbook3.html). All remained available until October 2000, but have now been removed. Too many links had gone bad, and as such the pages generated too many complaints about bad links, even though there was indication that they were no longer being updated and updated linkes were available within the new structure. For all texts it is now necessary to use the new structure. SECTIONS Subjects covered by the source texts in each Section. Studying Ancient History

Premiere of Haft Paykar: Seven Beauties
On April 2, the 2005 World Dance Showcase, sponsored by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (MNCPPC), featured a  new folkloric ballet, Haft Paykar (Seven Beauties), by award winning choreographer Laurel Victoria Gray and her Silk Road Dance Company.
Find out more about this groundbreaking production by reading a review of the performance.
Since its inception in 1995, Laurel Victoria Gray’s Silk Road Dance Company (SRDC) has delighted audiences around the country with traditional and fusion dances from the Middle East and Central Asia. Performing Uzbek, Afghani, Tadjik, Azerbaijani, Kurdish, Iranian, and Egyptian dance techniques rarely seen in the United States, their performances offer a unique glimpse of the life, culture, and art of little known regions.
The ensemble takes its name from the term "Silk Road," an evocative name coined by the 19th-century German scholar, Baron Ferdinand von Richthofen, to describe the network of caravan routes that linked China with the Mediterranean. Our repertoire celebrates the delightful dance traditions and sumptuous costumes of cultures along this fabled trade route — the Great Silk Road.

PARALLELS
Mesoamerican and
Ancient Middle Eastern Traditions by Diane E. Wirth Left: Right: Portrait of a beardless king from the Maya site of Palenque. Natives of the Americas cannot grow full beards. Then why did the man on the left have one?
Did ancient civilizations travel to the New World before Columbus arrived in 1492? Traditional archaeological teachings say "no," but evidence to the contrary is mounting. Now, Diane E. Wirth has assembled and analyzed an exhaustive collection of evidence that reveals the stunning parallels between Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican civilizations and the cultures of the ancient Middle East. In PARALLELS , she examines the similarities between Middle Eastern traditions, beliefs and iconography and those of Mesoamerican cultures. PARALLELS brings out in the open the long debated and very controversial subject of isolationism (Bering Strait theory) and diffusionism (theory of trans-oceanic voyages) regarding the influence of the ancient Middle East on the Western Hemisphere. It is a bold, fascinating, and reader-friendly study full of information on the plausibility of foreigners from the Middle East influencing New World cultures. Included in its 8-1/2 x 11" soft covers with perfect binding are 211 pages, 290 illustrations, 824 endnotes, 9 tables and 517 sources in the bibliography.

History of Syria Often called the Cradle of Civilization and the Gateway to History, Syria has a lot to offer history and the development of civilized man. On the other hand Syria's natural boundaries did nothing for the security of the land… its strategic location also made it vulnerable and many conquerors and attackers were able to conquer Syria. It has been a great crossroad for trade between the Mediterranean and the East; it exported the Alphabet to the West, and has been linked to Religion from the beginning, from the Semitic Deities to the monotheistic faiths. Settling, Agriculture and the Beginning of civilization 9000BC:
This is where civilization began. The development of agriculture in Syria meant settled communities. Tribes and peoples began to prefer agriculture to hunting and with the appearance of bronze and copper tools, agriculture developed quickly. Along with the development in agriculture came a development in trade, as urbanized communities began to engage in various economic activities. Ebla, Mari and the Bronze Age:

Welcome to Classics and Ancient History
By Classics we mean the study of Latin and Ancient Greek languages and literature. By Ancient History we mean the literature, history, art and archaeology of the ancient Greek and Roman civilisations, and their contributions to the modern world. Study of these subjects is important in gaining an understanding of the origins and nature of Western culture, as well as imparting useful research and linguistic skills. A degree which includes units in Classics or Ancient History is a very acceptable tertiary qualification for entry into many professions such as secondary and tertiary teaching, the diplomatic service, librarianship and administrative careers in the public service and industry.
