Aerial Photographic Archive for Archeology in the Middle East
PATRON: HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS CROWN PRINCE HASSAN BIN TALAL
Remote Sensing For Archeology in the Middle East
As this photograph by James Sauer of the Roman fort of Qasr Bshir in Jordan illustrates, the antiquities of Jordan can be spectacularly well-preserved (see Kennedy and Riley 1990). The AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC ARCHIVE FOR ARCHAEOLOGY IN THE MIDDLE EAST was established in 1978 under the patronage of Crown Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan. Financial support has been provided by, amongst others, the British Academy, the Society of Antiquaries of London and the Australian Research Council. To date it consists of over 8000 photographs and several hundred maps for several countries, mainly Jordan. See also the link to the Aerial Archive for Jordan Many other sites can be far less well-preserved. This small Byzantine town at Khirbet Khau in northern Jordan was difficult to interpret at ground level when visited by travellers a century ago and has been "lost" within the perimeter of a military base for the last half century. The air photograph, however, makes it far more readily and immediately intelligible, depicting the fort in the top right and the town which grew up around it on the west and south.

Armenian civilization had its beginnings in the sixth century BC. In the centuries following the Armenians withstood invasions and nomadic migrations creating a unique culture that blended Iranian social and political structures with Hellenic and later Christian literary traditions. For two millennia independent Armenian states existed sporadically in the region between the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea and the Caucasus Mountains until the last medieval state was destroyed in the fourteenth century. The Ancient Period The first major state in the region was the Kingdom of Urartu which appeared around Lake Van in the thirteenth century BC and reached its peak in the ninth century BC. The area encompasses several cultural and ethnic groups, including the Persian Arabic Greek Jewish ... Kurdish and Turkish cultures. The six main language groups are Persian Arabic Hebrew Assyrian ... Kurdish and Turkish . People from the Middle East are generally known by those in the West as being " Middle Eastern Most definitions of the "Middle East" in both established reference books and common usage define the region as 'nations in Southwest Asia , from Iran (Persia) to Egypt '. Consequently, Egypt, with its Sinai Peninsula in Asia , is usually considered part of the 'Middle East', although most of the country lies in North Africa . North African nations without Asian links, such as Libya Tunisia and Morocco , are increasingly being called North African as opposed to Middle Eastern (Iran to Egypt - Asia) by international media outlets.

Overview map of the Ancient Near East The term Ancient Near East or Ancient Orient encompasses the early civilizations predating Classical Antiquity in the region roughly corresponding to that described by the modern term Middle East Egypt , the Fertile Crescent Anatolia ), during the time roughly spanning the Bronze Age from the rise of Sumer and Gerzeh in the 4th millennium BC to the expansion of the Persian Empire in the 6th century BC . As such, it is a term widely employed in the fields of Near Eastern archaeology Ancient History and Egyptology The Ancient Near East is generally understood as encompassing Mesopotamia (modern Iraq and Syria Persia Iran Egypt , the Levant Israel Jordan Lebanon ... Palestinian Authority ), and Anatolia Turkey ). Some users of the term would extend its application into the Caucasus region, into modern Afghanistan (see Bactria Indus Valley Civilization Minoan and Mycenaean Greece and other peripheral areas. Still others would exclude Egypt from the Ancient Near East as a geographically and culturally distinct area. However, because of Egypt's intimate involvement with the region, especially from the 2nd millennium BC , this exclusion is rare.
