From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Overview map of the Ancient Near East The term Ancient Near East or Ancient Orient encompasses the early civilizations predating Classical Antiquity in the region roughly corresponding to that described by the modern term Middle East Egypt , the Fertile Crescent Anatolia ), during the time roughly spanning the Bronze Age from the rise of Sumer and Gerzeh in the 4th millennium BC to the expansion of the Persian Empire in the 6th century BC . As such, it is a term widely employed in the fields of Near Eastern archaeology Ancient History and Egyptology The Ancient Near East is generally understood as encompassing Mesopotamia (modern Iraq and Syria Persia Iran Egypt , the Levant Israel Jordan Lebanon ... Palestinian Authority ), and Anatolia Turkey ). Some users of the term would extend its application into the Caucasus region, into modern Afghanistan (see Bactria Indus Valley Civilization Minoan and Mycenaean Greece and other peripheral areas. Still others would exclude Egypt from the Ancient Near East as a geographically and culturally distinct area. However, because of Egypt's intimate involvement with the region, especially from the 2nd millennium BC , this exclusion is rare.

The Ancient Indus Valley Civilization
The underlying efficiency of the ancient Indus Valley civilization is remarkable. The Harappan government was very complex, and yet very efficient. An efficient and technologically advanced urban culture is clearly evident in the Indus Valley civilization. Advanced Harappan art indicates that the people of the ancient Indus Valley had fine artistic sensibilities. Moreover, the underlying efficiency of this civilization is accurately reflected by the complex Harappan social structure, which integrated several different ethnic and religious groups and ensured enduring peace and prosperity. The ancient Indus Valley civilization was quite clearly advanced, to a great extent. The Harappans were great lovers of the fine arts, and especially dancing, painting, and plastic arts. Various sculptures, seals, pottery, gold jewelry, terracotta figures and other interesting works of art indicate that the Harappans had fine artistic sensibilities. The art of the Harappans is highly realistic. The sheer anatomical details of much of Harappan art is unique, and terracotta art is also noted for its extremely careful modeling of animal figures. Sir John Marshall once reacted with surprise when he saw the famous Harappan bronze statuette of the slender-limbed "dancing girl" in Mohenjo-daro: When I first saw them I found it difficult to believe that they were prehistoric; they seemed so completely to upset all established ideas about early art. Modeling such as this was unknown in the ancient world up to the Hellenistic age of Greece, and I thought, therefore, that some mistake must surely have been made; that these figures had found their way into levels some 3000 years older than those to which they properly belonged. ... Now, in these statuettes, it is just this anatomical truth which is so startling; that makes us wonder whether, in this all-important matter, Greek artistry could possibly have been anticipated by the sculptors of a far-off age on the banks of the Indus.

What is the Ancient World? Greece, Rome, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Sumer, Nubia, Persia, Byzantium, Turkey? Or is it Assyrians, Chaldeans, Hebrews, Hittites, Akkadians, Etruscans, Minoans? Is it Alexander, Plato, Virgil, Socrates, Hammurabi, Aristotle, Nefertiti, the Pharaohs, Emperors, Caesar, Cleopatra, Sargon, Akhenaton, the Black Athena, Homer? Or is it the dinosaurs, Stonehenge, hunters, slaves, women, rulers, soldiers, or the Iliad, the Aeneid, the Odyssey, the Olympics? Is it found in the ruins, temples, forums, pyramids or in the remnants of ordinary life? Explore through this Web Book and the Online College Course. Ancient Civilization did not begin in what we think of as the West. It did not start in Paris or Berlin or London or Prague or Brussels or Stockholm. It grew out of the Mediterranean breezes, the sun and desert of Northern Africa, the Persian and West Asian lands. To study Ancient Civilization is to travel - across parts of Africa, southern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia to India. It is a linking voyage, not a reducing trip. It CONNECTS peoples, ideas, patterns, developments, organizations, wars, religions, art, architecture, food and drink. It is a human endeavor about a human story.

New Cairo museum to showcase ancient civilization: construction work has begun on an ambitious new museum on the plain of Giza. With completion scheduled by 2008, the new facility is expected to attract in excess of three million visitors a year. (Antiquities) Middle East, The September, 2002 by Ian Stalker The technology at Egypt's upcoming Grand Egyptian Museum is expected to be cutting edge but many of the furnishings found in the sprawling facility will be very old indeed. And some carefully crafted decorations will have a distinctly golden hue. The Egyptian government began the groundwork for the massive museum in February. Occupying a 117-acre site, just three kilometres from the Pyramids and the Sphinx on the plain of Giza, the museum will feature the largest display of Egyptian antiquities anywhere in the world.

The mirage of modern Middle East study at Yale
With rising interest in Near Eastern studies, why is Yale's reaction so cold?
    by Ali Frick
    Yale Herald
    November 12, 2004
http://www.yaleherald.com/article-p.php?Article=3772 A number of students majoring in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations (NELC) are expressing frustration at the dearth of contemporary Middle East course offerings at Yale, prompting concerns that the University, which prides itself on being at the vanguard of scholarly activity, is failing to keep pace with comparable institutions that offer comprehensive programs in Middle Eastern studies. Current political events in the region have sparked a rise in student interest, and some say the small department is having trouble meeting that demand. "The fact is that Yale is not providing students with access to knowledge of an area of the world that is so central to this nation's foreign policy," Timothy Arnold, JE '06, an NELC major, said. One student who asked to remain anonymous put it even more bluntly: "You can graduate from Yale as a NELC major and know nothing about the Mideast." The problem does not just affect NELC majors. "It's not necessarily a problem with the major, per se," Arnold said. "I really view it as a university-wide problem. Outside of the religious studies department, there really aren't any classes on the modern Middle East." While recent additions to the NELC department do cover modern Arab topics, they tend to focus on cultural, linguistic, or literary themes, rather than on current political or economic issues. Furthermore, both the history and political science departments each employ only one full-time professor who focuses on modern Middle Eastern studies. As Arnold said, "There are too few professors and too few classes."

    Program Description
The Middle East and North African (MENA) Program at Binghamton University coordinates study of the Middle East, North and Sudanic Africa, and European countries that have extensive Islamic contact. The program develops and integrates research and graduate and undergraduate instruction about the MENA area. Courses related to this area are offered in history, geography, political science, anthropology, sociology, economics, music, Arabic, Ottoman and modern Turkish, Hebrew, and Persian. Undergraduate students with majors in the humanities and social sciences may enroll in the Middle East and North African Program and, upon successful completion of the program, receive a MENA certificate. To receive the certificate, students must meet all college and departmental major requirements and complete the MENA requirements, including a total of eight MENA courses. Independent studies and honors work may be credited as MENA courses, when approved by the appropriate department and the MENA committee. The program does not supplant the normal disciplinary specialization or undergraduate major, but permits certain selections that constitute a coherent course of study about this area, within the framework of requirements for graduation. Opportunities are available for travel and study in the MENA region under SUNY sponsorship (for example, in Binghamton's Arabic studies program in Morocco).
