Middle East
Jul 9, 2005 The smash of civilizations
By Chalmers Johnson
Note from Tom Engelhardt , editor of Tomdispatch
There have been many dispiriting sights on TV since Bush launched his ill-starred war on Iraq - the pictures from Abu Ghraib, Fallujah laid waste, American soldiers kicking down the doors of private homes and pointing assault rifles at women and children. But few have reverberated historically like the looting of Baghdad's museum - or been forgotten more quickly in this country.
The untidiness of history
In archaeological circles, Iraq is known as "the cradle of civilization", with a record of culture going back more than 7,000 years. William R Polk, the founder of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Chicago, says, "It was there, in what the Greeks called Mesopotamia, that life as we know it today began: there people first began to speculate on philosophy and religion, developed concepts of international trade, made ideas of beauty into tangible forms, and, above all developed the skill of writing."

    Ancient Near East to 1648
    Description of the Examination
The Western Civilization I: Ancient Near East to 1648 examination covers material that is usually taught in the first semester of a two-semester course in Western Civilization. Questions deal with the civilizations of Ancient Greece, Rome, and the Near East; the Middle Ages; the Renaissance and Reformation; and early modern Europe. Candidates may be asked to choose the correct definition of a historical term, select the historical figure whose political viewpoint is described, identify the correct relationship between two historical factors, or detect the inaccurate pairing of an individual with a historical event. Groups of questions may require candidates to interpret, evaluate, or relate the contents of a passage, a map, or a picture to other information, or to analyze and utilize the data contained in a graph or table.

My frustration...thousands of years of survival and 95% of the information available is from 3000 B.C. and newer. Why is it so hard to find infromation predating written history? Almost everything older is just in ancient pictures and maps, no information to accompany them. Enjoy the ancient pictures, near east and middle east maps. Let them raise the questions of who these people were. What did they know? Who did the know? Where did they come from? Your mission? Ponder these questions and find the answers.

Egyptian Interaction with the Middle East Egypt has a rich and fascinating history with the Middle East. Although Egypt is the best known and most researched empire in the area, the others in the Middle East contributed to its grandeur. No culture has ever began with only its own traditions and methods. Other cultures from the area contribute to all the things that distinguish one culture from another. Interaction between Egypt and its neighbors has added many different aspects to Egyptian culture that we study today. The most apparent interactions take place directly. These interactions are those that make direct connections from one culture to another. Trade route that intersect areas and wars involving two or more cultures are examples of direct interaction. Indirect interaction is less apparent, but none the less, it is just as important. Indirect interaction is the dealings that cultures have with others that don’t directly go from one popular culture to the next. As ideas and goods are exchanged indirectly, they are modified to fit the culture that has adopted them. Indirect interaction with Egypt’s Middle Eastern neighbors was very influential in making Ancient Egypt what it was.

    Programme outline:
The BA in the Archaeology of Ancient Civilizations at the University of Liverpool is a unique programme within the UK, providing students the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of the major ancient cultures of the Mediterranean basin and the Middle East from a comparative perspective, while ensuring that students receive the methodological and theoretical training essential for doing archaeological work of the highest calibre. This programme capitalizes on the unparalleled breadth and depth of expertise in the archaeology and history of the ancient Near East, Egypt, Greece and Rome within the School of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology (SACE). Students have the opportunity to participate in the field trip to Classical Turkey and/or archaeological fieldwork Beginning in 2004-2005 academic year, the new B.A. in The Archaeology of Ancient Civilizations means that the School will be then be offering nine degree courses with an archaeological component. We can only offer such a wide range of specialist degree programmes because we are one of the largest archaeology departments in Britain, and our size also ensures that students enrolled in the B.A. in The Archaeology of Ancient Civilizations will have access to modules and staff expertise covering the full-spectrum of archaeological practice from a global perspective. Furthermore, The University of Liverpool has one of the best archaeology libraries in the U.K. and is particularly strong on resources for the study of the Mediterranean, the ancient Near East and Egypt. The School also has its own archaeological museum with over 40,000 artefacts, the majority of which originate from regions that are the focus of the Archaeology of Ancient Civilizations degree.

Students will use maps to look at the distribution of oil in the Middle East and discuss what it means for the different countries in the region. They will also examine how water has influenced the region historically (in the "fertile crescent" region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers) and politically (for example, how Iraq's access to water is limited to one small part of its border). Finally, they will study specific aspects of Iraq's struggles with water, using satellite imagery to understand and illustrate the problem. Connections to the Curriculum: Geography, geology

MARCH OF THE TITANS - A HISTORY OF THE WHITE RACE Chapter 16 : Racial Cauldron - Rome and the Near Middle East The story of Roman expansion to the east is no less dramatic than that of its extension to the west - the major difference was that in racial terms, the effect of occupying areas to the east was far greater than the areas in the west. In fact, it was the extension of the Empire to the east which ultimately led to its downfall, for through the inclusion of eastern territories, vast numbers of people were drawn into Rome who shared a different genetic inheritance than the original founders - unlike the situation in the West. Once again, as had been the case with every great civilization before it, Rome fell because the original people who created the Empire disappeared: submerged into a mass of foreigners - replaced by immigrants and the descendants of slaves brought in from all over North Africa, the wider Mediterranean and the Middle and Near East. Above: The full extent of the Roman Empire in the east is shown here: From the Tigris-Euphrates Rivers to the southern reaches of the Nile - in this way masses of mixed race peoples from this region were given access to Rome itself. RACIAL DEVELOPMENTS IN THE EAST PRIOR TO THE ROMAN EXPANSION Prior to the Roman expansion into the Middle and Near East, the process of racial integration in that region had proceeded apace. Original Nordic Indo-European and Old European Mediterranean types had all but vanished by the year 100 BC. In the space of a few hundred years, large numbers of Indo-Europeans had been completely submerged into the far faster breeding Semitic, Arabic and Asian elements filling up the Middle and Near East.
