Middle Eastern Culture
The Middle East is built on a magnificent legacy of civilizations dating back to ancient times. Science, the arts, written language, mathematics, a legal system, and other hallmarks of civilization flourished in ancient Sumer, Persia, Egypt, and other parts of the Middle East, leaving a lasting influence on the later cultures of Greece and Rome. Today, the Middle East continues to offer the world a rich cultural contribution, as home to three major world religions, a vibrant entertainment industry, a fascinating tradition of folkloric music and dance, and a growing economic power base. The articles on this page are slanted toward the needs and interests of non-Middle Eastern people, particularly those interested in music and dance from the region.

    From Foreign Affairs January 1997
Bernard Lewis is Cleveland E. Dodge Professor Emeritus of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University. His books include Cultures in Conflict: Christians, Muslims, and Jews in the Age of Discovery and, most recently, The Middle East: A Brief History of the Last 2,000 Years. In 1593 an Ottoman historian, Selaniki Mustafa Efendi, recorded the arrival in Istanbul of an English ambassador. He was not very interested in the ambassador, but he was much struck by the English ship in which the ambassador traveled. "A ship as strange as this has never entered the port of Istanbul," he wrote. "It crossed 3,700 miles of sea and carried 83 guns besides other weapons . . . It was a wonder of the age the like of which has not been seen or recorded." Why was this sophisticated Istanbul historian so interested in a ship coming from a barely heard of island et whet was then the wrong end of Europe? Selaniki Mustafa Efendi's wonderment is not that difficult to understand if one recalls what was happening at the time. The Portuguese had sailed around the Cape of Good Hope and were active in Eastern waters, to be followed not long after by the Dutch and the English. Portugal, one of the smallest and least populous of the nations of Western Europe, was able to establish a maritime and commercial paramountcy in South Asia which three great Muslim empiresthe Ottoman, the Persian, and the Mogul Empire in Indiawere unable to prevent or reverse.

A trip through Lebanon is a journey through the annals of some of the world’s greatest civilizations. With over 5,000 years of recorded history, the country is a treasure trove of archeological wonders, waiting to be discovered by visitors who want a glimpse into the ancient and modern past. Most of Lebanon’s historical sites have layers upon layers of ruins, with each layer uncovering the story of another civilization that inhabited this ancient land. Prehistoric Times (5,000-3,000 BC) A trip through Lebanon’s history begins in Byblos, where archaeologists have discovered the earliest known settlements in Lebanon.Today, remnants of prehistoric huts with crushed limestone floors, primitive weapons, and burial jars are evidence of the Neolithic and Chalcolithic fishing communities who lived on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea over 7,000 years ago.

MAKING SENSE OF MIDDLE EASTERN RELIGIONS Throughout the ancient Middle East, various religions and forms of worship sprang up or evolved at different times. Many of these are mentioned in Biblical accounts and in the records of the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Assyria and Babylon. Along with these ancient accounts, the Middle East is filled with many temples, high places, and holy places. One of the reasons we struggle to understand ancient religion, is because today we live in a world with a vastly different worldview than the ancients did. Almost all of the ancient civilizations lived in a world-view that included a strong mix of fear-power worldview. (See Honor and Shame in a Middle Eastern Setting So, in order for Nabataea.net readers to grasp the larger picture of religion in the ancient Middle East, we have put together this short paper that will explain various important aspects that must be considered. 1.
