Many international businesses which are interested in developing their market in the Middle East have been lured by some attractive features offered by Dubai. The sheer size of the market in Dubai has been increasing at a steady pace. Although the United Arab Emirates has a relatively smaller population than other Middle East countries, its total imports have been registering a steady growth with the passing of each year. The impressive performance can be attributed to the fact that Dubai has emerged as the major re-export centre for the entire Middle East region.
In addition to inter-Gulf trade, Dubai also reaches an "outlying ring" of huge markets including East African countries, the CIS, Iran and the Indian sub-continent. Therefore, by establishing a base in Dubai, international businessmen, manufacturers and exporters of less sophisticated equipment and mass consumer products can also successfully find readily available buyers for their goods. MODERN INFRASTRUCTURE
The UAE has a fairly well developed and modern infrastructure. Land transportation is by road. A concrete road network links all main cities. Authorities in Abu Dhabi and Dubai are busily engaged in widening existing roads and upgrading the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway. There is no rail system in the UAE, nor any domestic air transportation network, despite the fact that five of the seven emirates have modern airports. All the emirates have modern seaports. The port of Jebel Ali in Dubai is the largest manmade port in the world. Goods are imported for the most part by sea and distributed by truck within the UAE and to nearby locations in neighboring GCC countries.

    The right chemistry
With a little help from HSBC, Al Nahda International has turned today's invoices into tomorrow's cash flow
Al Nahda International's unassuming head office, deep in Dubai's Al Quoz industrial area, tells little about its scope of operations. The company supplies industrial chemicals to some of the largest companies in the world – detergents to Unilever, oil refining chemicals to EPPCO, and paint chemicals to Jotun, to name just a few examples. Its distribution network stretches as far as China, although the majority of its customers are located in the Middle East and India. In addition, the company plans to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by oil-rich Iraq, and it also plans to expand into Africa. Typical of most companies with corporate customers spread all over the globe, Al Nahda conducts its trade through letters of credit (LCs), cheque discounting, and on open account terms with its regular customers. With the latter it often meant that payment could be delayed for up to 12 weeks. With an annual sales turnover of over $20 million, that meant a lot of cash tied up in debts owing to the company. Now, however, thanks to a new factoring service from HSBC, Al Nahda has been able to take more control of its trade cash flows.
    How factoring works
"With LCs, there was a lot of paperwork," acknowledges T.R. Vijayan, MD of Al Nahda International (pictured). "The documents had to be 100% correct, and any discrepancy meant that there were no timely funds coming into us." With cheque discounting, Vijayan adds that customers were in the habit of extending credit lines beyond their stipulated terms of credit. This meant that factoring, a trade finance instrument that is widely practiced in the US, Europe and Asia, but that has so far had little application in the Middle East, was an appealing option.

    Global Economy
Mar 17, 2005 India, China locked in energy game
    By Chietigj Bajpaee
HONG KONG - In the words of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, "China is ahead of us in planning for its energy security - India can no longer be complacent." These words conveyed the sense of urgency that India holds over meeting its energy needs.
India is playing catch-up with other major players in the global energy game. This realization has not come a moment too soon, given the advent of rising oil prices, India's unprecedented growth levels, lack of energy-efficient technologies and reliance on energy-heavy industries for its development.
Power shortages and blackouts continue to plague India's major cities and undermine the confidence of investors and foreign companies operating in India. These power shortages have been fueled by a combination of burgeoning growth rates, inefficiencies by the state-run power sector and power being stolen or siphoned for votes. The growing popularity of gas-guzzling sports utility vehicles and multi-purpose vehicles in India is also placing strains on its energy needs.
