Publication - Microprogramming and Its Relationship to Emulation and Technology Authors: Fuller,S.; Lesser, V.R.; Gordon Bell, C.; Kaman, Charles Title: Microprogramming and Its Relationship to Emulation and Technology Abstract: This paper is a survey of the development and future trends in microprogramming. We show how the structure of microprogrammed processors has been shaped primarily by two factors: the state of (semiconductor) technology and the task of emulation. The other main theme of this article is that it is a fruitless exercise to try to characterize and understand microprogramming in terms of how it differs from 'regular' programming. The right approach to understanding microprogramming is to recognize that it is primarily applied to the task of emulation (interpretation). Through this approach the evolution of microprogramming, independent of a particular technology and type of instruction set being emulated, is reviewed and future trends indicated. Microprogramming
A microprogram is a program consisting of microcode that controls the different parts of a computer's central processing unit (CPU). The memory in which it resides is called a control store. It is the modern form of the logic of a computer's control unit. Before 1951, the control logic for central processing units was designed by ad hoc methods. One of the simplest was to use rings of flip-flops to sequence the computer's control logic. In 1951 Maurice Wilkes had a fundamental insight. He realized that if one takes the control signals for a computer, one could understand them as being played much like a player piano roll. That is, they are controlled by a sequence of very wide words constructed of bits. A microprogram provides the bits to control these. The fundamental advance is that CPU control becomes a specialized form of a computer program. It thus transforms a complex electronic design challenge (the control of a CPU) into a less-complex programming challenge. To take advantage of this, computers were divided into several parts:

    Chapter 1: Microprogramming
We will start this module with a quick look back at some earlier implementation techniques. This is partly to set the scene, and partly to explain the background of some later developments (that were initially controversial). The control parts of computers prior to the mid 60s were constructed, essentially of electronic components structured into logic gates. It was quickly discovered that building computers, especially the control logic was complex and error-prone, and hence techniques were developed to further structure systems and reduce errors. Nevertheless, it was still difficult and complex, and errors were hard to fix. In 1957 Maurice Wilkes proposed an alternative called Microprogramming- at the time, it was highly impractical. (Incidentally, Wilkes was - and is - a highly significant Computer Scientist who was responsible for EDSAC, which tends to compete with the Manchester Mark 1 for the title of first 'real' computer.) However, in 1964 IBM launched its 360 range - highly significant machines in the 60s. The 360-series' influence on machine architicture design is still visible today, particularly in Intel 80x86 and Motorola 680x0 processors, whose instruction sets are essentially evolutions of the 360 original. IBM still produces mainframes today that use the same architecture. Only the top of the range machine was not microprogrammed, because it was not possible to provide the required performance (traditional methods, for all their faults, were fast).
