What is distance learning?
Distance learning is essentially any course that can be provided and followed outside of the traditional classroom environment. The courses tend to fall into one of three main categories:
  • Distance Learning: This is generally defined as any mode of learning where the study takes place wholly at home but the materials are still 'physical' ie books, cassettes, CD-ROMs, videos Open Learning: Study takes place off-site the majority of the time, but requires some infrequent attendance at a centre. It includes mediums both physical or electronic E-Learning/Online Learning: Study takes place over the internet, either live or via email 'lessons' sent to your inbox

  • If you're looking for a Distance Learning course with the flexibility to allow you to study from your own home, in your own time, you can start your search here with our brand new search tool which has over 15,000 distance learning courses.

You must be able to manage the financial impact.  Obvious costs include the tuition, regular fees, special technology fees and textbooks for the courses.  You can contact the MLT Program Director for a listing of estimated costs.  But you must also plan for the financial impact presented by your periodic visits with Barton MLT personnel, your commitments to your cooperating lab, and your commitments to your assigned clinical affiliate for the clinical internships. Expect travel expenses, and consider the "lost income" while you are gone from your workplace. You must identify and solicit the support of a cooperating laboratory.

Topic 4: Creating Online Course Components Faculty Team Members: Consultants: Christel Vonderscheer - Harford Gary Kaiser - CCBC Mary Beth Graham - Carroll CC Andrew Habermacher - PGCC Joan Demko - WorWic Bob Ouellette - UMUC Analyze the Audience
    • The faculty member should have experience with teaching face-to-face courses, and are preparing to teach online for the first time (or are developing a brand new online course) The faculty member should have an idea of which basic course components in their face-to-face course they would like to utilize in an online course (in some form) This level of training would be appropriate for the Beginner/Intermediate
    Learning Objectives
    • Familiarity with the various online course components Understanding of the different levels of sophistication that an online course may take on, based upon the number and type of components included in the course Ability to assess the effectiveness of an online course for their particular discipline
    Critical Issues
    • Must be content-specific There is no one solution that will fit all courses or disciplines The typical online course will evolve from a basic level to a more complex level (with regard to number of components, technological level, and interactivity) as the course is offered in subsequent semesters
