Description
Trends in Microbiology provides a multidisciplinary forum for the discussion of all aspects of microbiology: from cell biology and immunology to genetics and evolution, and ranges across virology, bacteriology, protozoology and mycology.
Microbiology is, at present, one of the fastest moving disciplines in Life Sciences, thanks also to technological developments of the recent years. The relative ease and rapidity with which small genomes can be entirely sequenced is beginning to have significant impact on all areas of prokaryote biology, from pathogens to extremophiles, and will fuel new developments, for example, in drugs, vaccines and industrial enzyme research. Recent international developments are also responsible for a renewed interest in Microbiology.
The Table of Contents includes a lively mix of commentary, correspondence and review. Reviews are commissioned and peer-reviewed and, consequently, make an authoritative basis for teaching and keeping abreast of developments across the field.

Terrestrial Environments CHAPTER OVERVIEW
This chapter discusses the general characteristics of microorganisms associated with soils. Soils are dominated by solid materials, and the environment is mostly aerobic. Soils respond to changes in temperature and moisture and to the effects of plowing and other disturbances. Many of these responses are reflected or mediated by the microbial populations found in the soils. CHAPTER OBJECTIVES After reading this chapter you should be able to: Rhizobium -legume symbiosis CHAPTER OUTLINE binding affinities for nutrients and other substances can create different microenvironments within the soil; (e.g., anaerobic microsites) C Contributions to Soils Streptomyces, produce an odor causing compound called geosmin which give soils their characteristic earthy odor C organisms that respond rapidly to the addition of easily utilizable substrates such as sugars and amino acids C indigenous forms that tend to utilize native organic matter A palatable microorganisms), causing an increase in the rates of nitrogen and phosphorus mineralization

The general stress regulon of Bacillus subtilis is induced by the activation of the B transcription factor. Activation of B occurs as a consequence of the dephosphorylation of its positive regulator RsbV by one of two phosphatases that respond to either physical or nutritional stress. The physical stress phosphatase

    Using the Biological Literature
Web Resources Microbiology and Immunology This chapter includes reference sources useful for microbiology and immunology. Microbiology is "the scientific study of microorganisms (e.g. bacteria, viruses and fungi)." For purposes of this discussion, however, fungi such as yeasts are included with plant biology in Plant Biology . Immunology is the study of immunity, "the state of relative insusceptibility of an animal to infection by disease-producing organisms". (Oxford Dictionary of Biology, 4th ed, 2000) Because microbial systems are convenient and effective for studying a whole range of life processes, there is a significant overlap between this section and the sections covering biochemistry and biophysics molecular and cell biology , and genetics , respectively. Although medical microbiology and immunology are not comprehensively discussed in this chapter, some basic materials are included that pertain to the study of pathogenic microbiology and diagnostic immunology.
