ADDITIONAL RESOURCES Increasingly, computer-supported-decision-making has entered into the Microbial World and the Clinical Laboratory. Initially, these were limited to single-dimensional yes/no type of algorithms. Presently, these have evolved significantly; hence, we have a number of software programs that utilize this technology:

Pan Celtic Microbiology Conferences are held every two years, Society of Clinical Microbiologists and the Scottish and Welsh microbiology associations.
    http://www.nics.gov.uk/press/hss/011116d-hss.htm
16 November 2001 HEALTH MINISTERS OPEN PAN CELTIC MICROBIOLOGY CONFERENCE "My Department has put a great degree of emphasis on improving the surveillance of healthcare-associated infection. I am therefore pleased to be able to announce my Department’s funding of the Healthcare-Associated Infections Surveillance Centre (HISC) at a cost of £100,000 a year. Based at the Royal Hospitals site in Belfast, HISC is under the directorship of Dr Ed Smyth and became operational on 3 September this year." HISC aims to help acute Trusts undertake effective surveillance. Its first job is setting up a surveillance programme in elective orthopaedics. "The current crisis has illustrated the need to be prepared to respond to the threat posed by the deliberate release of deadly pathogens, and highlights the need for vigilance, and effective and co-ordinated surveillance. It brings into focus the importance of international co-operation." NOTES TO EDITORS:
  • Pan Celtic Microbiology Conferences are held every two years, organised by the Irish Society of Clinical Microbiologists and the Scottish and Welsh Microbiology Associations. The Irish Society is hosting the conference this year. This is only the second occasion on which the meeting has been held in Ireland – the first time being Kilkenny in 1995. About one hundred delegates are expected to attend. The speakers come from Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Canada, with two from the prestigious Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
