The second course is for third year students in applied chemistry or paper technology and deals with different natural and synthetic polymer groups and their chemistry. The third course, which is taken by fourth year students, gives a deeper knowledge in selected problems in polymer chemistry. This course is the most advanced course that students take before they do their Master of Science work. Membrane Technology, 5 cr. A postgraduate course can be taken in Membrane Technology and in 1993 it was given for the first time with both foreign students and students from other laboratories and universities present. The course is included in both the GSCE and the PaPSaT graduate school programmes. 5675 Synthetic Polymers, 3 cr.

Teaching and Research Activities Currenty, Microbiology is one of the largest Departments in the Faculty of Science of NUI, Galway and is host to several undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses. Approximately 160 students are taught Microbiology in the 2nd year of the B. Sc. degree, followed by 150 students in 3rd Year, and 30-40 students in the 4th year honours course. The Department also directs a denominated B. Sc. degree in Environmental Science (15 students per year), and is active in the teaching of two other denominated B. Sc. degrees, Biotechnology (20 students per year) and Marine Science (20 students per year).
In addition, staff in the Department of Microbiology are actively involved in teaching in the Faculty of Medicine. Professor Houghton is responsible for teaching Human Genetics to both Medical and Nursing students and contributes to the Master of Medical Science degree course
The Department of Microbiology has a large postgraduate school with approximately 35 students taking postgraduate degrees annually. Postgraduate courses include the Higher Diploma in Applied Sciences (Microbiology) (15 students annually), and the M. Sc. in Biotechnology (8 students annually). All departmental staff direct active research groups with research-based M.Sc. and Ph.D. postgraduate positions available each year.
