The National Women's Law Center claims that in the area of vocational and technical education, Title IX has been ignored and sex segregation is pervasive. The automotive repair industry needs qualified female employees to help lower its employment deficit, and we should not lose these potential employees due to outdated stereotypes. Estimate the projected deficit in technicians within the automotive repair industry over the next 10 years. Does around 50,000 employees sound right? How about 100,000? Not even close. Over the next 10 years the projected deficit in automotive repair technicians is a whopping 418,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook. Women account for nearly half of today's work force. Why, in an industry desperately in need of qualified employees, are there so few female automotive repair technicians? The National Women's Law Center appears to have found the answer. A report released by the center June 6 examines sex bias in high school vocational and technical programs, a violation of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.

News and Information Services The weeklong annual Road Scholars tour invites participants to apply for special seed money from the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies for research projects that stem from their tour experience. Examples of projects already under way include those with the Saginaw Career Complex and the Grand Traverse Band Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.
    Saginaw Career Complex
U-M faculty visited the Career Complex and talked with students and teachers about U-M admissions procedures, entrance criteria and class information, says Nancy Renko, Saginaw Career Complex language arts coordinator. Several possibilities for helping the students gain college success were discussed, including:
  • Keeping in touch with Career Center students who are admitted to the U-M and tracking their progress.
  • Using Delta College, a Saginaw area community college, as a pathway for Career Center students who wish to gain admission to the University.
  • Communicating to students the necessary courses, grades and admission criteria.

In the United States, the term is most often used with reference to schools and hospitals, neither of which are directly certified by the federal government. Instead, because of the long tradition of libertarianism in the U.S., accreditation is performed by private nonprofit bodies known as accreditors. In contrast, in other countries, higher education institutions must receive the permission of the government to operate, and thus accreditation is performed by the government. For example, in Australia, higher education providers generally need approval of the federal or state governments (or a non-government body to whom this power has been delegated), or an Act of Parliament, depending on the nature of the institution. This system differs in that unaccredited institutions are often illegal, and thus diploma mills are much less of a problem in these countries.

Architect Ernest Crimi Date of Initial Construction
See also: Highlights of Buffalo's History, 1929 Historical and Architectural Importance The school building applies the Art Deco style with stylized Gothic Revival style features to an industrial form. The structure utilizes horizontal bands of window glazing between vertical pier supports, a common style seen in industrial factories built at this time.
The structure was designed by Ernest Crimi. Crimi began his career with the firm Green and Wicks and later Wicks and Hopkins. He was a student of the landscape architect Bryant Fleming. In 1923 he became the architect for the Board of Education. Under his direction the following public schools were designed and built: nos. 6, 17, 28, 39, 53, 71, 72, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 80, 81, Burgard Vocational High School.
The school was organized in 1910 as a printing class in the vocational department opened in Public School No. 5 on Seneca Street and Public School No. 44 on Elm Street. In 1912 the two classes were combined and moved to a rented building at Michigan and Tupper Streets, under the name of School of Printing. A move in 1914 to Technical High School's vacated building on Elm Street established it as the Elm Vocational School. The curriculum was expanded to include aviation and automobile mechanics.
An appropriation of $1,000,000 was made by the City Council in 1926 for the construction of new facilities to house the vocational school. A donation of five acres of land on Kensington Avenue was made to the City by Henry P. Burgard, a paving contractor, with the understanding that the school be named Burgard Vocational school.
