Political identity and civic education
a review of experiences in german vocational schools
By Cynthia Lynn Miller On a gray morning in March, I exited a streetcar in East Berlin with a crowd of teenagers, all of us shaking snow and slush off our shoes. "I can't believe this is the first day of spring," I thought to myself, following the crowd across the street and into a secondary vocational school for cooking and hotel trades, where I was about to begin classroom observations with civics teachers. Inside, I headed to the teachers' lounge, where the atmosphere was hectic but upbeat, as teachers passed materials to one another, chatted about specific classes, and discussed instructional ideas. "Are you a new colleague?" teachers asked me, and then offered their thoughts on the German education system, the civics curriculum, or current political debates. Although I only had two observations scheduled that day, I ended up spending a full day at the school, as teachers found out about what I was doing and invited me into their classrooms. Students were curious too, once they found out that I was from overseas: "What do you think about George Bush?" "What do Americans think about Germany?" They told me their opinions too, in the hallways, in the cafeteria, and after school, when I conducted interviews. As I wrote this report, it was spring in Berlin, and all over the city, folded tables and chairs lie stacked against the outside walls of cafes and restaurants, just waiting for the weather to cooperate. Because I moved to Germany from Michigan, where it often snows in April, a late spring isn't an entirely new phenomenon for me - and in the end, it's not even an important factor at all. After all, what matters most to me is what's happening inside - in the classrooms of Berlin's vocational schools.

Desperately Seeking Shop Students
ALBANY, N.Y., April 30, 2004
"In a very odd juxtaposition of education policy, we are now requiring an even higher standard for graduation for youngsters who go to a vocational school."
Steven Sanders
N.Y. Assembly's Education Cmte.
(AP) One of the richest scholarships in North America for high school students isn't for physics or calculus, but for starting a dead sedan.
The National Automotive Technology Competition sponsored by auto makers and tool companies earlier this month offered $3 million in prizes. It's one of the ways industries encourage vocational education at a time when states and the nation are emphasizing math, languages and sciences.
As academic standards rise, some fear a decline in the vocational education that for decades has produced the nation's entry-level craftsmen. Matt Bushnell and Todd Clark, both from Albany suburbs, beat nearly 40 teams from as far away as Los Angeles and Toronto in the two-day competition in New York City. The test was to find as many bugs as they could in a modern car with 36 or more onboard computers - more than the Apollo lunar module.

tampa vocational schools. Historians David Tyack and Larry Cuban wondered whether ohio vocational schools. I should note a narrower motivation as well.
    http://www.nowe-liceum.pl/vocational-schools-michigan.html
What was unequal was the division of resources allocated for black education at local, state and national levels. What was excellence was the legacy of schools under the control of the black community. This is not a call for a return to an era that needed to end an illegal institution, but a call to recognize the general decline in black control and focus on the educational agenda. As a disempowered people confronting an unfriendly world, the transition for blacks from segregation to desegregation got what the plaintiffs wanted but cost them what they had! tampa vocational schools Historians David Tyack and Larry Cuban wondered whether the New American Schools initiative was just the latest example of ambitious reformers promising to create sleek, efficient school machines light years ahead of the fusty schools of their times, yet ultimately being overcome by the education systems unreceptive environment. They argued that such efforts to reinvent schools have in practice often resembled shooting stars that spurted across the pedagogical heavens, leaving a meteoric trail in the media but burning up and disappearing in the everyday atmosphere of the schools. ohio vocational schools I should note a narrower motivation as well. My university is just completing a major overhaul of its general education program, accomplished in record time, amid some dispute but with an impressively constructive faculty contribution. My purpose is not to dwell on our particular program. I have no stake in one of the most common impulses in general education discussions: to claim once one has developed a feasible model, it must be defended as the only one that fills the bill. There is no platonicessence here. I do believe, however, that there is an interesting set of choices to be made concerning general education, and recent participation in the elaboration of one promising program certainly drives this lesson home.

    Traditional Indian Education
The traditional way through which Native American children were educated for the responsibilities that they would assume as adults was by working with and imitating their elders. There was no "school" as it was understood by nineteenth century Europeans. Rather, children were allowed to roam freely throughout the community stopping and asking questions when and where they pleased. Children would work companionably alongside their parents or other adults, helping in small ways and gaining confidence and ability in various skills. Children often engaged in what the Dakota referred to as "small play," impersonating adults and mimicking their activities, conversations, and manners. Grandparents played a very important role in the education of children. Grandmothers, for example, bore responsibility for making girls "well behaved women." A grandmother would take it upon herself to tutor her granddaughter in the subtleties of daily life, such as how to move, how to interact with elders, where to sit at ceremonial occasions. In the evening it was common to send a daughter to her grandmother bearing a gift of food or tobacco. The gift was an invitation to the grandmother to instruct the child in the tribe's traditions that would help the girl understand both her place in the tribe and her people's place in the world.
