Mission The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence is committed to increasing the supply of highly qualified teachers essential for achieving student success. Vision The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence believes that all students are entitled to a quality education, and that a quality teacher with mastery in subject area and professional teaching knowledge will make a difference in student learning. We evaluate our success based on K-12 student learning, support programs and policies that ensure that all students have the advantages of a quality teacher regardless of income, race, parental involvement school size or any other 'real-life' socio-economic factors. Why Teach? Teachers influence the lives of people from all walks of life. Doctors, housekeepers, accountants, engineers, business executives, clergymen, office managers and construction workers all have one thing in common: they were taught by a teacher. Each can recall a positive classroom memory that has impacted his or her lives. Today, the success of students nationwide is undermined by a different reality: overcrowded classrooms, a high teacher turnover rate, an absence of teacher diversity, and a limited number of teachers holding degrees in the subjects they teach.

Teachers Certification
The National Academy of Needlearts offers a Teachers' Certification Program which includes training in all aspects of embroidery instruction, from the development of teaching and presentation skills to study in design and color and the production of the written work necessary for the successful teaching of needle arts. NAN's program is suited to either the novice or the experienced teacher of the needlearts who wishes to develop and refine her/his instructional skills. Full certification requires three years of intensive study. During that time the candidate designs and develops several classes in her/his chosen medium, and compiles a viable portfolio of her/his own original teaching pieces. Book critiques, color and design notebooks, and oral teaching presentations complete the certification process. In addition, the candidate also participates in several hands-on teaching experiences. The oral presentation and the display of the candidate's embroidered work are among the highlights of the Certification Weekend, held in conjunction with the NAN Assembly for Embroiderers. College of Education SVSU is fully approved as a teacher-training institution by action of the Michigan Board of Education and is fully accredited at the bachelor's and master's levels by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Also, the College is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) at the basic and graduate levels. Statewide regulations govern the certification of teachers, which SVSU must enforce. There are additional requirements the college has added that can make you a better teacher. These requirements should improve students' chances of finding an appropriate teaching position. The goals of the program collectively prepare students to work intensely with individuals, become effective classroom teachers, and, as professional educators, make a broader contribution in the field of education. SVSU graduates can place in perspective their assumptions about children, the nature of learning, the process of education, and the role of the educator.

Let me tell you something about teacher certificationlet me tell you about my Grandma Lula. She started teaching near Ludington in 1906at the age of 18, with an 8th grade education. She'd passed a teachers' test and the State said that was good enough for it to trust her with a one-room school. A few years later she left teaching to marry. My Dad was born, and a year later her young husband died of TB. She wanted to return to teaching, but the State now required teachers to have a year of "normal" school training. She left her infant son on the farm with his grandparents and moved into Ludington to attend County Normal. In the fall of 1913 she was back in the classroom. In 1917, at the age of 29, she got her high school diploma.

National Conference on Teacher Quality - Exemplary Practices in Teacher Preparation Exemplary Practices
B-1: Bringing Diverse Populations into the Teacher Certification Process
The College of Education at Wayne State University focuses on the preparation of professional educators for urban settings. In 1997 the College won the AACTE award for best practice in the area of supporting diversity in the teaching profession. Preparation programs at the College are field-based and work in close collaboration with the public schools, including the Detroit Public Schools. The theme of the College is "The Urban Educator as a Reflective, Innovative Professional."
History
The College of Education at Wayne State University has always been committed to recruitment of a diverse population of students. Approximately 25% of the 30,000 students at the University are from minority groups. Within the College of Education, however, small pools of students from minority groups were applying for initial teacher preparation programs. In an attempt to increase the number of certified teachers from minority groups, two major initiatives were developed: articulation agreements with local community colleges; and alternative pathways to teaching programs with the Detroit Public Schools. Located in the center of Detroit, in close proximity to downtown, Wayne State University is commuting distance from the five campuses of the Wayne County Community College District. Henry Ford Community College is located in Dearborn, Michigan, also an easy commute to the campus of WSU. Both community colleges have open admissions policies and serve a non-traditional population with an average age of 27. Both institutions have high numbers of students who are members of minority groups. All three institutions are large and complex.

Reforms in Preservice Preparation Programs and Teacher Certification Standards
Just as states, districts, and educational associations are beginning to rethink professional development strategies to support school improvement, they are also trying to reform preservice preparation programs and teacher certification standards. They have been exploring better ways to prepare new teachers, certify experienced teachers, and provide ongoing professional development to practicing educators. Many organizations-including schools, universities, and national educator groups-have created professional development schools that fit the continuing needs of teachers, from their preservice period to after many years of practice. In addition, educators, professional organizations, private foundations, and others have established a National Board for Professional Teaching Standards that can certify and recognize exceptional, experienced teachers.
Professional Development Schools
The professional development school framework encourages simultaneous restructuring of K-12 schools and colleges of education. Professional development schools provide clinical settings that prepare novice teachers to succeed in real schools and communities. Like medical students who serve an internship in hospitals, novice teachers learn to apply their coursework to the everyday challenges of actual teaching. The schools also provide ongoing professional development for experienced teachers and university faculty.
