In 1997 the College won the AACTE award for best practice in the area of supporting diversity in the teaching profession. Preparation programs at the College are field-based and work in close collaboration with the public schools, including the Detroit Public Schools. The theme of the College is "The Urban Educator as a Reflective, Innovative Professional." History The College of Education at Wayne State University has always been committed to recruitment of a diverse population of students. Approximately 25% of the 30,000 students at the University are from minority groups.
