Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm has proposed zero-interest loans to school districts to help create new high schools of no more than 500 students. These smaller schools are intended to increase student learning by creating a learning environment in which students interact more personally with their teachers. A debate has followed. The movement toward "smaller learning communities" grew out of the shooting spree in April 1999 at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., and concerns about the impersonal nature of large high schools. [04/25/05]

From the Executive Director by Ric Wiltse MACUL honors three Michigan schools as STAR award winners Last March, three schools each received $10,000 as winners of the first Ameritech School Technology Achievement Recognition (STAR) awards for exemplary use of technology. Old Mission Peninsula Elementary (Traverse City) Birmingham Covington , and Southfield Lathrup High School were honored at a banquet held at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham on March 28. At the STAR banquet, Lisa Hamway , Ameritech Director of Corporate Contributions, stated: "The Ameritech STAR Awards were created for two reasons: As the concept evolved, we decided that we needed to work with people who had the insight on what it takes to be technology-savvy in today’s school environment. We are pleased to partner with one of the top education associations in the state to produce the STAR Awards – and that group is MACUL. Ameritech has had a long and fruitful partnership with MACUL. They are true friends of Ameritech." MACUL thanks Ameritech for its support of educational technology and for funding the STAR program. We also thank the MACUL Board Grants Committee, and the Macomb Intermediate School District team of

MATRIX uses its unique position in the communications revolution to pioneer ideas and innovations, as the heirs of the Internet develop into the 21st century. While we have a cautious view of the value of the communications revolution for teaching, we support experimentation and innovation in the classroom. In addition to developing a wide range of teaching tools, we are focusing at the present on two main challenges: the digitation of sound files so that they can best be utilized by teachers, students, and researchers, and the development of large-scale integrated research tools that can be developed by widely disparate repositories and freely accessed worldwide.

Three Organizations Prepare for Next Disaster
As disaster relief and human service organizations begin to transition from providing immediate emergency services to attending to the longer-term needs of Hurricane Katrina victims in the devastated areas and across the country, the Red Cross, The Salvation Army and United Way of America join together to ensure victims receive the kind of services each organization provides to those in need. American Red Cross
The role of the Red Cross is to build a bridge of assistance by providing food, shelter, counseling, financial assistance and other emergency needs for victims of disaster until they can access more permanent aid provided by local, state and federal agencies. After the emergency period ends, the Red Cross assists by coordinating services with other agencies such as The Salvation Army and United Way to help families affected by disasters. The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army has an extensive disaster response and recovery infrastructure able to meet the short-term and long-term needs of disaster survivors. Through its partnerships with other faith-based and non-faith based organizations, and its long-term working relationships with federal, state and local governments, the Army is prepared to provide food, clothing and shelter in the aftermath of storms, and then utilize its network of nearly 1,300 major centers of operation, and the collective efforts of nearly 50,000 officers and employees across the United States to assist survivors with long-term recovery needs that include counseling, pastoral and medical care, child care, senior citizen care and financial assistance.

Mackinaw City, Mich.— When he visits a elementary school classrooms across northern Michigan this month, Jeff Dykehouse will have the students stand up and form a circle. Then he’ll hang pictures of apples, deer, owls, insects and other Great Lakes flora and fauna around the necks of the students.
“We’ll pass a ball of string to any other person in the circle with a picture of something we’d eat, or that might eat us,” says Dykehouse. “Pretty soon we’ll have a big tangled ‘web’ that shows how interconnected all these plants and animals and humans are.”
Dykehouse, a park naturalist for Mackinac State Historic Parks (MSHP), will visit area classrooms this November to present “Water, Woods and Wildlife.”
“I get the kids to think about how we all share this wonderful habitat in the Great Lakes region,” Dykehouse explained. “It makes an impression when students can actually hold a bear skull in their hands.”
