Contact Instructional Resources and Media Services (IRMS) Instructional Resources and Media Services is a service oriented department used by the entire SAIC community. We are responsible for ensuring the school community access to basic media/computer equipment and services to foster the experimentation and education of artists. Students, faculty, and staff may check out a variety of media equipment to create or document their art or to teach art classes. We provide faculty with many support services such as the media-equipped 'Smart Classrooms'along with figure model hiring and scheduling for the Painting and Drawing and Sculpture classes. IRMS provides training and access to facilities such as the Final Cut Pro editing systems and the Advanced Digital Authoring Suites. We also provide audio/visual support for the Visiting Artist series and other special events held in the school's Auditorium. An IRMS Media Center is located in three of the school's downtown buildings. The main Media Center is on the 8th floor of the 112 S. Michigan Avenue building. Most of the portable equipment, such as lighting kits, sound recording equipment, and 35mm and digital still, film, video, and DV cameras are located in the 112 building. The Media Centers on the second floor of 280 S. Columbus Drive and the third floor of the Sharp Building at 37 S. Wabash exist primarily to support classes in their buildings although they do carry some additional equipment.

JULY 30, 2004 Michigan Tech and the Alberta Village Museum Association will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the acquisition of the Ford Forestry Center at Alberta on Saturday, Aug. 7.
The sawmill was the key part of Alberta, a model community built by Henry Ford in the 1930s and named after the daughter of H. C. Johnson, the supervisor of Ford's UP operations. The mill and the people who ran it provided wood for Ford cars, but as the company's demand for wood decreased, it scaled back its Alberta operations. In 1954 the Ford Motor Company donated Alberta and 1,700 acres of surrounding forest to Michigan Tech. The School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science at Michigan Tech has been running the Center since. The School now uses the center for their Fall Practicum for juniors in Forestry and Applied Ecology and Environmental Sciences degree programs, teaching, outreach, and research efforts. The Alberta Village Museum Association also runs tours of the sawmill.

The festival honors Michigan high school students gifted in the areas of dance, drama, instrumental and vocal music, visual arts, creative writing, and film/video. Honorary chairperson of this year's festival is Thomas A. Chandler, senior vice president and chief financial officer for National City Credit Card Services. Chandler has served with the bank for 18 years and, in 1999, relocated to Kalamazoo from Columbus, Ohio. He is an active member of the Kalamazoo community and is involved with several organizations, including United Way, Gryphon Place, Western Michigan University's Haworth College of Business and the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo. This year's artist-in-residence is Peter Sparling, artistic director of the Peter Sparling Dance Company of Ann Arbor. Sparling is recognized internationally as a modern dance classicist, master teacher and innovative choreographer. He is a past member of the Martha Graham and Jose Limon Dance Companies. Sparling will bring his entire company of seven members to work with students participating in MYAF, and will conduct a workshop that will integrate the work of creative writing and dance students. This will be the first year that the artist-in-residence for MYAF will be funded by a corporate sponsor, National City Bank.

Michigan's top high school fine arts students gather at WMU
April 27, 1999 KALAMAZOO Over 1,000 of the state's finest young artists will gather Thursday through Saturday, May 6-8, for the 37th annual Michigan Youth Arts Festival at Western Michigan University. The festival honors Michigan high school students gifted in the areas of dance, drama, instrumental and vocal music, visual arts, creative writing, and film/video. Unique to the state of Michigan, the festival began in 1963 as simple talent screening of young musicians. Today, it is a comprehensive arts spectacular, culminating a nine-month search for the finest artistic talent in Michigan high schools. Honorary chairperson of this year's festival is Betty Boone, executive director of the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, a position she has held since 1991. Prior to that she had been on staff with the former Michigan Council for the Arts since 1980, serving in a variety of capacities ranging from grant program coordination to management of the council's grant program office. The daughter of internationally renown Washington, D.C., artist, John N. Robinson, Sr., Boone has also been a community development consultant and is the former chairperson of the state and regional Program Panel for the National Endowment for the Arts. The outstanding students attending the festival will share their talents with their peers and the public through performances and exhibitions. In addition, part of the participant's experience while at the festival includes educational workshops and clinics offered by professional artists including Dr. Anton Armstrong, Conductor and Professor of Music at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, and Conductor of the St. Olaf Choir, a position he assumed in 1990; Terry Blackhawk, poetry, and Peter Marcus, fiction; Kathryn Vander, of Vander Films, Detroit who will teach the film/video workshop; and faculty members from the WMU Departments of Art and Theatre, teaching a variety of workshops.

The Grand Rapids Press; Grand Rapids, Mich.; Nov 30, 2001; Asher Pimpleton / The Grand Rapids Press; A red van dubbed MOLLIE will bring computer training, high-speed Internet access and video-production to schools that have been bypassed by the so-called information superhighway. MOLLIE, short for "Mobile Learning Laboratory for Information Education," comes with 20 laptop computers, 16 video cameras and wireless Internet access, said Dirk Koning, executive director of the Community Media Center, a nonprofit group that promotes media access. "We've targeted schools with minimal technology," Koning said. "They're going from virtually zero technology to the best." The center developed MOLLIE with a $234,000 grant from the Department of Education and an $80,000 donation from Ameritech/SBC. The grants also allow the center to hire a director for the project for one year and provide funding for marketing and promotions and curriculum development. Seventh- and eighth-grade students have responded well to MOLLIE programs, which are being piloted at St. James School, said principal Thale Varana.

Loans to build small schools split experts
Reactions from Michigan education experts and groups:
Detroit News
April 26, 2005 Karen Adams, dean of the College of Education and Human Service, Central Michigan University: Gov. Jennifer Granholm has proposed zero-interest loans to school districts to help create new high schools of no more than 500 students. These smaller schools are intended to increase student learning by creating a learning environment in which students interact more personally with their teachers. Nationally, smaller schools have been credited with decreased dropout rates and increased test scores. This plan is an excellent and exciting one for Michigan, as long as those designing these new schools realize that just changing the size of the student body does not guarantee an increase in learning. Teachers and administrators must plan specific strategies ranging from class scheduling and teaching strategies to actual learning community activities. Involving those from similar and successful small school initiatives may provide important assistance in this planning process.
