The Military Applications Society awards several prizes to recognize those who make substantial contributions towards the advancement of military operations research. The Koopman Prize , named for Bernard Koopman, a founding father of military operations research, is a $500 award for the best published paper or report on military operations research. Bernard Koopman (1900-1981),was a pioneer in the field of operations research who was active in the founding of the Operations Research Society of America (ORSA) and served as its president in 1956. ORSA merged with The Institute of Management Sciences (TIMS) in 1995 to create INFORMS. Koopman served as an operations research liaison between the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.K. military establishments and NATO, and played a critical role in introducing operations research as a permanent NATO activity. The J. Steinhardt Prize is a $1,000 award to honor individual career accomplishments in practicing or managing military operations research. The Outstanding Military Academy Student Research Prize recognizes a distinguished operations research student at each military academy for superior scholarship. A $300 award and plaque is presented as part of the graduation ceremony.

SENATOR CARL LEVIN Carl Levin, the youngest of three children, was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. He attended Detroit public schools and graduated from Central High School in 1952. After high school, Carl attended Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, where he majored in political science with minors in English and history. Carl graduated with honors in 1956 and continued his education at Harvard University Law School where he received his law degree in 1959.
