Lewis Griffin Gorton
Biographical Information Lewis Griffin Gorton (b.1859 d.1933)
President State Agricultural College previous back to exhibit next Lewis Griffin Gorton was born November 18, 1859 at Waterloo, Michigan, the son of Aaron T. Gorton. He was a graduate of Chelsea High School, as well as of the Michigan Normal College (1879). He later obtained a M.S. degree from the South Dakota Agricultural College. He was married and had one son, Guy R. Gorton. Gorton taught science at the Michigan Military Academy and later became the principal of Duffield School (1883-1885) and Bishop School (1885-1893) both in Detroit, Michigan. In 1893 he was selected to succeed Oscar Clute as the President of the State Agricultural College because of his youth, educational experience and ability to maintain student discipline at the Bishop School. He was apparently well liked by the students and successfully eliminated rowdy student behavior. He also directed the establishment of the short course program in which individuals received six weeks of intensive instruction on farm related topics. However, the Secretary and the President of the State Board of Agriculture did not agree with Gorton's policy relative to the students. In addition, a segment of the faculty did not support Gorton, feeling that he had been ill chosen. As a result, in fall 1895, the Board asked Gorton to resign. He refused on the grounds that any charges against him be first specified and that he be given an opportunity to answer these charges. The Board refused to do this and placed him on temporary suspension, with pay until January 1, 1896 (the suspension was never made permanent).

ROTC Leaders Development and Assessment Course is the most important training event for an Army ROTC cadet or National Guard Officer Candidate. The 32-day camp incorporates a wide range of subjects designed to develop and evaluate leadership ability. The challenges are rigorous and demanding, both mentally and physically. Leaders Development and Assessment Course tests intelligence, common sense, ingenuity and stamina. These challenges provide a new perspective on an individual's ability to perform exacting tasks and to make difficult decisions in demanding situations. Over 5000 Army ROTC cadets and National Guard Officer Candidates from throughout the nation will attend the ROTC Leaders Development and Assessment Course. The camp will consist of 14 ROTC and 2 OCS training cycles with the first cycle beginning in June and the last cycle graduating in August.

The rich heritage of the United States Military Academy Band dates back to the Revolutionary War. As the oldest active band in the U.S. Army and the oldest unit at West Point, the Academy Band has a long and noble history of service to the nation. By an act of Congress in 1802, the Military Academy was established, and with it the need for military music. In 1817 the ensemble gained the title "West Point Band," and by 1866 had been officially given the name it still bears today. The Military Academy celebrated its bicentennial during the 2001-02 academic year, and the theme "Duty-Honor-Country: West Point at 200 Years - Timeless Leadership," is exemplified by the Academy Band's proud, continuous service at West Point. The band is celebrating this singular occasion through a myriad of events. Among these are a series of concerts at West Point's Eisenhower Hall; the recently released compact disc titled West Point on the March ; a composition contest, the winner of which was Alan Fletcher for

Aldrin was chosen as a member of the three-person Apollo 11 crew that landed on the Moon on 20 July 1969, fulfilling the mandate of President John F. Kennedy to send Americans to the Moon before the end of the decade. Aldrin was the second American to set foot on the lunar surface. He and Apollo 11 commander Neil A. Armstrong spent about twenty hours on the Moon before returning to the orbiting Apollo Command Module. The spacecraft and the lunar explorers returned to Earth on 24 July 1969. In 1971 Aldrin returned to the Air Force and retired a year later. He wrote two important books about his activities in the U.S. space program. In

    E-Cybermission Contest
By Paul D. Mehney Warren, Mich.-Four eighth grade girls from Malow Junior High, located in Utica, Mich., stole the spotlight at a star-studded event in Washington, D.C., winning the Army-sponsored E-Cybermission National Competition. After touring the nation's capitol, the team, named the "Brilliant Girls," dined with the Army's elite, including Army Chief of Staff Gen. Eric K. Shinseki, and received their award for developing a code based enhancement package to the current 911 emergency system. E-Cybermission is the Army's science, math and technology Web-based student competition. The Army created the program in October 1992 a way to foster math and science skills in middle school students, but also to get the nation's future leaders thinking about community problems and how to solve them through teamwork. (fifth from left) Jerry Pantano, advisor, poses with the winning eCybermission team members Sara Craun, Sara Kusminski, Marissa Munaco and Lauren Palmer.
