www.sfgate.com Heavy hitters back Michigan in race case Stanford, Intel among those filing briefs Kelly St. John, Chronicle Staff Writer Monday, February 17, 2003 ©2003 San Francisco Chronicle As the Supreme Court prepares to tackle what could be its most important affirmative action case in two decades, several prominent California organizations from corporate giant Intel to elite Stanford University have joined a wide constellation of groups supporting the University of Michigan's race-conscious admissions policies. While the final list of parties who back the university will not be complete until Tuesday the deadline for friend-of-the-court briefs to be filed with the Supreme Court it is shaping up to be a virtual who's who of America's business, education and labor leaders. Among those filing briefs on behalf of the University of Michigan are dozens of Fortune 500 companies, the nation's top private universities and colleges, the American Bar Association, the AFL-CIO, more than 100 Democrats in Congress, and several former high-ranking military commanders who want to preserve affirmative action at the nation's military academies. Last month, the Bush administration filed a brief opposing the university's policies, along with Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, several conservative groups and Ward Connerly, the California man who helped devise Proposition 209 banning affirmative action in public education and employment. "This is certainly one of the pivotal civil rights cases in our lifetime," said Mark Agrast, who chairs the American Bar Association's committee on individual rights. "The stakes are very high." FOCUS ON TWO CASES The Supreme Court hearing is scheduled for April 1.

Military Schools
What Military Schools Have to Offer
Military Schools General Rules
These types of schools all have very strict guidelines that must be followed, no exceptions. Most schools start at 6 am sharp, and all cadets are expected to be in formation fully dressed in their uniforms, with their boots polished. Girls that are in a military school are not allowed to wear bright nail polish, or lots of makeup. Their hair has to be either put up in buns, or cut above the collar of their uniforms. Most military schools will have their cadets called to formation before allowing them to have their meals.
Privileges are earned in a military school, if you want something you have to work for it. If a cadet wants to play a video game or go to town on the weekend, they have to earn this privilege. To earn these privileges, a cadet has to earn rank; you give nothing, you get nothing. Military schools do not allow any types of misbehaving, this includes fighting, the use of any drug, or sexual activities either in the school or when on leave to go into town. Being able to work together as a team is a requirement that is necessary from every cadet in a military school.
Military Schools Not for Everyone
Military schools can be great for some children and help them to excel as an adult, but these schools are not for everyone. Some children would not be able to deal with this type of disciplinary school. Any child with the following problems probably would not do well in a military school. If they:

Michigan teacher must cover cost of substitute while on military duty
[an error occurred while processing this directive] ASSOCIATED PRESS GRAND RAPIDS A Michigan school district told a teacher activated for military duty that he must cover the cost of a substitute during part of his absence and give the district some of his military pay. At a school board meeting this week, angry teachers, students and district residents criticized the decision by administrators at Kenowa Hills Public Schools. "Is this how you treat people that defend your country?" Tom Lovett, a teacher's spouse and district resident, asked board members. Barry Bernhardt, a middle school science teacher and a National Guard reservist for at least a decade, started serving two weeks of active duty in Italy on Monday, the day of the school board meeting. During the 10 days Bernhardt will be gone from the classroom, he will use two personal days and two compensation days during his time off.
