News 'Don't ask' policy impairs military recruiting By Kristin Ostby, Daily Staff Reporter December 10, 2004 Cliff Davidson, a member of the University student group Outlaws, said he is also pleased with the ruling. Outlaws represents lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender law students at the University. The military recruits law school students primarily for positions with the Judge Advocate General Corps, or JAG, which provides legal and policy advice to the Secretary of the Navy. Lt Gen. Joe Richard, a Department of Defense spokesman, said military recruiters should have access to schools that receive federal funds. The ruling was a victory for the plaintiffs, collectively called the Forum for Academic and Institutional Rights and made up of 25 constituents, including a number of prominent law schools such as those of Harvard University and New York University. FAIR brought the lawsuit against U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and the Department of Defense in opposition to the Solomon Amendment, which was enacted in 1994.

News Former military officers seek to further diversity By Jeremy Berkowitz, Daily Staff Reporter February 20, 2003 In July 1948, as one of the first in a long series of acts and bills over the next 30 years that eliminated legal segregation against minorities, President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9981, ordering integration of the armed forces. Yesterday, in a nation with a military that has enlisted soldier and officer minority rates of 40 and 19 percent, respectively, 29 former top-ranking military officers filed a brief supporting the University's two pending U.S. Supreme Court lawsuits. The University will defend its race-conscious admissions policies before the court April 1. "The military has made substantial progress towards its goal of a fully integrated, highly qualified officer corps," the briefs says. "It cannot maintain the diversity it has achieved or make further progress unless it retains its ability to recruit and educate a diverse officer corps." Both military service academies and ROTC scholarship programs consider race in selecting applicants.

U-Michigan Gets Broad Support on Using Race washingtonpost.com By Charles Lane Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, February 11, 2003; Page A01 As the Supreme Court faces its biggest showdown over a racial issue in 25 years, America's business, education and labor leaders are throwing their weight behind the University of Michigan's bid to preserve race-conscious college and university admissions. Among the organizations and individuals who are planning to submit friend-of-the-court briefs supporting the university are several dozen Fortune 500 companies, the nation's elite private universities and colleges, the AFL-CIO, the American Bar Association and a list of former high-ranking military officers and civilian defense officials, according to attorneys involved in the case. Though its ultimate impact on the court is difficult to gauge, this impending flood of briefs shows the degree to which the American establishment has embraced the pursuit of diversity through race-conscious means since the court's 1978 decision in the Bakke case. Regents of the University of California v. Bakke, the court's last major ruling on race-based admissions, has been interpreted to mean that race may be a "plus factor" in admissions as long as there are no strict numerical quotas. These pillars of U.S. society have lined up behind Michigan less to defend the particulars of its admissions programs, which award extra points to minority applicants, than to defend an array of race-conscious policies and practices they have come to believe in and rely on and which could be threatened if the case goes against the Ann Arbor school.

If you'eve been wondering how you can help keep our young people from killing and being killed in Iraq, this story by Mary Scarsella describes how you, too, can make a difference. Last fall, after reading my September 28 column "Stop the Military Recruiters, Mary, a staff member of Groundwork for a Just World, decided to join fellow staff member Ron Scott on a speaking engagement at a local high school. We prepared and took along form letters (see below) for the students to sign requesting that their information not be turned over to military recruiters. Nearly all the students signed the form and they were collectively turned over to the principal at the end of the presentation.

Early history and establishment
In , Joseph Tarr Copeland, a retired Civil War general (b. May 6 ), purchased several acres of land and built his retirement home on the shores of Orchard Lake agricultural purposes, and he was slowly selling tracts of land for profit. The area was popular with tourists, so in Gen. Copeland converted his residence, a large, castle -like home on the shores of Orchard Lake , into the Orchard Lake Hotel. Business was good for a few years but development in the area forced many vacationers to seek seclusion farther north and the Panic of 1873 forced Copeland to find profit elsewhere. In
