Based at the Flint Public Library
The City of Flint, Michigan, is the birthplace of General Motors and has long ridden the fortunes of the automobile industry. With a population of 140,761, composed almost equally of whites and African Americans-with smaller percentages of Native Americans, Asians, and Latinos-the city has the tenth highest average wage of any U.S. metropolitan area. At the same time, 45 percent of the children in Flint live below poverty level-and the city faces the difficult problems of suburban sprawl, declining school enrollment, and a diminishing tax base. Flint also has many assets: several institutions of higher education; popular annual art and jazz festivals; and a nationally acclaimed cultural center that includes a planetarium, an art institute, a museum, an institute of music, a radio station, and a community meeting hall. Along with these the city boasts another acclaimed cultural institution-the Flint Public Library. The Flint Public Library The Flint Public Library (FPL), according to director Gloria Coles, "continues to uphold, as it has for the last 144 years, the fundamental principles that make public libraries public libraries. It is open and nonjudgmental to those who enter its doors. It provides a full spectrum of recorded knowledge and opinions. It is free."

University library gets lighting boost from fluorescent fixtures with prismatic design

Narrow aisles and high shelves make library stacks notoriously difficult to light well. In the Kresge Business Administration Library at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, student complaints about inability to read titles and call numbers on books in the shelves provided the impetus for a lighting retrofit of the 17,500 square-foot central stack area.
Fixtures chosen for the project are Percepta II luminaires from Holophane Corporation, selected because of their "bat-wing" photometrics. The fixtures' prismatic design produces a twin beam pattern that generates beneficial sideward illumination, which was necessary to light the eight-foot high shelves evenly from floor to top shelf.
A total of 132 fixtures with single T8 lamps were installed, replacing the same number of luminaires using two T12 lamps. The previous fixtures had a vertical design, with one lamp mounted on top of the other. A standard ballast was used.
Surface-mounted Percepta II luminaires are installed parallel to the shelves, versus the perpendicular placement of the previous system, which resulted in spotty illumination. Units are linked end to end, with one ballast operating two fixtures. Mounting height is 10 feet, with spacing at 4 1/2 feet.

Van Wylen Library Boosts Service to Patrons by Joining the MeLCat Statewide Resource-Sharing System
The Library of Michigan and the Michigan Library Consortium are pleased to announce that Van Wylen Library is one of the newest additions to MeLCat, the statewide catalog and materials-delivery service. MeLCat offers library patrons simple and convenient Web-based access to a single, collective catalog of participating libraries’ holdings. Library patrons will enjoy the following benefits through MeLCat: one-stop searching via the Internet to quickly identify materials owned by all types of libraries statewide; access to valuable local history materials and digitized items; the ability to request library materials remotely from any place at any time; and online monitoring of the status of information requests. A link to MeLCat has been added to the HopeCAT catalog. If an item is not available at the Hope libraries, a user can simply click to search MeLCat. Hope students and faculty should expect material to be delivered to the library in two or three days and can pick it up at the library’s main circulation desk. They may keep material for 21 days. For more information about MeLCat, contact the Van Wylen Library Reference Desk at 395-7904. Hope is also participating in a visiting library patron program. This means that Hope students may use their Hope I.D. card to check out materials in person from other participating libraries throughout the state.
