Lake Michigan is one of the five North America n Great Lakes . It is bounded, in clockwise order from the south, by the US states of Indiana Illinois Wisconsin , and Michigan , which is named for it. Lake Michigan is the only one of the Great Lakes wholly within the borders of the US ; the others are shared with Canada . It has a surface area of 22,300 square miles ( 57750 square km ), making it the largest freshwater lake in the US, and the 5th largest lake in the world. It is 307 miles long by 118 miles wide. It greatest depth is 923 feet (281 m). It contains a volume of 4,918 cubic km of water. Its surface averages 580 feet above sea level, the same as Lake Huron , to which it is connected through the Straits of Mackinac . Geologically, Michigan and Huron are the same body of water. Both are part of the Great Lakes Waterway . In earlier maps of the region, the name "Lake Illinois" has been found in place of "Michigan".

Detroit, Michigan's largest city, is called the Automobile Capital of the World or Motor City . Michigan touches four of the five Great Lakes - Erie, Huron, Michigan and Superior. It also has an additional 11,000 smaller lakes. The state's 5,000 kilometer shoreline is longer than that of any other state except Alaska. Geography is the study of the description, distribution, and interaction of the diverse physical, biological, and cultural features of the Earth's surface. Geography prepares you for a wide variety of careers such as elementary and secondary school teaching, tourism and travel, environmental studies and analysis, regional and urban planning, and cartography. Graduates find job opportunities in school systems, colleges and universities, and government agencies. The courses allow you to broaden your knowledge and awareness of the world and its people. If you are planning to transfer to a four-year school, you should become familiar with the entire four-year program, selecting courses to meet as many requirements as possible. You should see your advisor for assistance and approval. Scholarship Opportunities
Lake Michigan College has several scholarships available to students that are based on academic excellence, need, and other criteria.

Multi-layered Economic Restructuring in an Old Industrial Region: The Pittsburgh Transition
Sabina Deitrick, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA The restructuring of regional economies, particularly in older industrial regions, presents a complicatead version of a post-industrial transformation. Researchers have examined the relation between changes in the structure of production and regional development trends through the post-Fordist transition. Others have studied new propulsive forces in regional development through innovative local milieux. Transition, however is uneven across space. This paper examines theoretical reasons for the economic transition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, through an analysis of employment trends over the past decade. The findings show that, despite a quite remarkable economic turnaround in the late 1980s in the wake of severe steel-related employment losses, the region's pace has slowed considerably in the 1990s. The trend has shifted from a 1980s model of successful post-industrial transition to laggard growth in the 1990s. The article examines reasons for this change by adopting a multi-layered view of transition in older industrial regions.

92. BCBSM - Dartmouth Atlas - The Geography Of Health Care In Michigan
The geography of Health Care in michigan Acute Care Hospital Resources and thePhysician Workforce Variations in Hospitalizations for Medical Conditions
http://www.bcbsm.com/atlas/geography.shtml
The Medicare program maintains exhaustive records of hospitalizations, which makes it possible to define the patterns of use of hospital care. When Medicare enrollees are admitted to hospitals, the program’s records identify both the patients’ places of residence (by ZIP Code) and the hospitals where the admissions took place (by a unique numerical identifier). These files provide a reliable basis for determining the geographic pattern of health care use, because research shows that the migration patterns of patients in the Medicare program are similar to those for younger patients. Medicare records of hospitalizations were used to define 3,436 geographically distinct hospital service areas in the United States. In each hospital service area, most of the care received by Medicare patients is provided by hospitals within the area. There are 109 of these hospital service areas in Michigan. The maps in this section show the location of each of these areas. Hospital service areas have been further aggregated into hospital referral regions, based on the pattern of use of cardiac surgery and neurosurgery. The maps also show the hospital referral regions to which the hospital service areas belong. There are 15 hospital referral regions in Michigan.
