Michigan Geography- Geographically, Michigan is made up of the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. The Lower Peninsula resembles a mitten in shape, and its landscape ranges from virtually flat (the Saginaw River Valley) to large hills (in the northwest). The majority of the state's inland lakes are in the Lower Peninsula. The Upper Peninsula-or "U.P.," as it's called-is made up of forest and wetland areas, with rocky cliffs along parts of the Lake Superior shore and the Porcupine Mountains rising in the far west. PEPPER SCHOOL STRUGGLING TO IMPROVE: Excited but scared, teachers in Oak Park get ready
Big changes planned, especially in 4th grade
August 21, 2003 BY LORI HIGGINS
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER J. KYLE KEENER/DFP
At Pepper Elementary School in Oak Park, first-grade teacher Mary Walker organizes her new classroom on Tuesday, days after learning she'd been switched from teaching second grade. By 8:30 this morning, and after a summer spent lolling around, Pepper Elementary School's 380 students will take their places in class for what will be a defining year for the struggling school. The stakes are higher than ever. If fourth-graders don't pass the MEAP this winter, the Oak Park School District will have tough decisions to make: Should it replace Pepper's staff? Replace the curriculum? Extend the school day or school year? New rules require that something be done to help schools like Pepper, one of 720 Michigan elementary and middle schools that don't meet academic goals prescribed by the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

    Michigan Curriculum Framework for Geography
APPLICATION NO : R215G30033 APPLICANT : Michigan Department of Education Curriculum Development Program P.O. Box 30008 Lansing, Michigan 48909 CONTACT PERSON : Barbara Atkins TELEPHONE : (517) 373-7248 AWARD TO DATE : $699,917 PROJECT PERIOD : 09/01/93-08/31/96 The Michigan Geography Framework Project has developed content standards in geography as part of the state's core academic curriculum and reform of education in the State of Michigan. The need in Michigan is for a geographic framework which will meet or exceed national standards, be consistent with the Michigan Common Goals of Education, and be useful to teachers involved in school restructuring. The framework must also emphasize the ways geography supports and links with other disciplines and be accompanied by non-threatening ways of assessing learning standards which help teachers improve instruction. The Michigan Department of Education and the Michigan Geographic Alliance will develop and disseminate content standards and related support materials, including materials for parents. The Project will create performance-based assessment mechanisms to help teachers evaluate their instruction. The Michigan Geographic Alliance will provide a 24 day-long teacher workshops, two two-week summer institutes, and six one week summer teacher workshops on the framework. Six model programs will be developed in school districts. Central Michigan University will develop a model program in teacher education based on the framework, run four workshops on teacher preparation, and work with the Department of Education to revise teacher certification standards.

Lake Michigan lies between the two peninsulas. The Upper peninsula is very sparsely populated, more than 90% of the peninsula being forested. The Lower peninsula contains the cities, industry, and agriculture. The Upper and Lower Peninsulas were connected in 1957 with the construction of Big Mac, the Mackinac Bridge." Name origin
The city is named after the Kalamazoo River , but no one is certain as to where the name Kalamazoo actually comes from. A lack of evidence means that the truth will likely never be found, but there are four common theories:
  • It is derived from the Potawatomi word negikanamazo , which is variously translated as " otter tail" or "stones like otters." This could refer to area wildlife. Most widely accepted is the legend of a Potawatomi named Fleet Foot. In order to win his bride, he was required to run from his settlement to a point on the river and back before a pot of water boiled away. This event is thought to have occurred in , a couple of decades before the first permanent white settlers. The Potawatomi word kikalamezo appears on an atlas of the area. The word translates as "boiling pot" or "place where the water boils," and refers to the Fleet Foot legend.
