F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic The Great Gatsby is not set in just one location. From Long Island to Chicago to Detroit, pertinent action takes place all over the United States. These locations in the 1920s, however, were nothing like they are in modern times. If one considers the phenomenal technological breakthroughs that have occurred in modern times, one can begin to appreciate how much the following modern cities have changed from the era that the novel takes place.
New York City
Years ago, New York City was a small-scale version of the bustling metropolis that it is today. The 1920s was a time of great change and innovation and a town of "roaring music, gaudy entertainment and perpetual prosperity" (Arakian and Smith n.p.).
New York City is composed of five different sub-cities, known as "boroughs." The five boroughs are Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. In The Great Gatsby , Nick, Myrtle, and Tom most likely go to Manhattan on their excursion, as Manhattan is the "original New York" (Climo). Manhattan is the home of skyscrapers, subways, Fifth Avenue, Greenwich Village, theaters, museums, and concert halls. Even in the 1920s, buildings as high as 66 stories stretched to the sky. The subway, originating only a decade earlier, was growing and becoming a staple in NYC transportation. Tom would be particularly attracted to Manhattan because of the fashionable Fifth Avenue and trendy Greenwich Village, both appealing to the wealthy in general.

A shoreline county, Benzie is also bordered by Leelanau County to the north, Grand Traverse County to the east and Manistee County to the south. You can't overstate the natural wealth of Benzie County. Rolling hills, rugged coastal dunes, 621,052 acres of state forest land, two large, gorgeous lakes, an excellent harbor and two highly renowned sport fishing rivers all grace the county's 322 square miles. The county has one of the smallest county populations (12,200) in the region. Beulah, the county seat, is 30 miles southeast of Traverse City. In recent years Beulah and other Benzie communities, Benzonia, Frankfort, Elberta, Honor, and Lake Ann, have experienced an overflow effect from Traverse City's commercial and population explosion. During the past five years, people have discovered they can live in the serene setting of Benzie County and easily commute to work in Traverse City. Others have learned that Benzie is a pleasant retirement haven. Consequently, the No. 1 concern of Benzie County citizens is coping with rapid population growth. Manistee County is another shoreline county in the heart of beautiful Northwest Michigan. It is bordered by Benzie County to the north, Wexford County to the east and Lake and Mason counties to the south. It is a blend of natural and historic treasures and innovative social experiments. Coastline cities include Onekama, Arcadia and Bear Lake. Inland communities include Copemish, Kaleva, Brethren and Wellston. The county population totals 20,000.

The terrain is rolling hills but there are large expanses of flat land on which farms and, more recently, subdivision s are built. The Huron River runs mostly north-south through the township. Commerce was formerly a weekend and summer resort for Detroit ers because of the area's small inland lakes and peaceful seclusion, but due to recent development the cottages are now all permanent homes. There has been a sharp increase in population in the last few years, mostly on or near the several lakes and golf course s. Much of Proud Lake State Recreation Area is within the township. Spring Semester LA 492 Book Review
Blindly accepting all this is written on a subject, however, without critically evaluating the context and/or content can be devastating to a field. In this course, as a part of your last semester as an undergraduate, I hope to introduce you to the concept of research in part through critical evaluation of books. This is to give you practice in critically evaluating the work of others, and to help you think about ways to improve your own writing and reporting style. The book reviews also should help you to develop the confidence and experience in performing critical reviews in the future. In the end, you should read, review, and write better when it comes to technical material of a written nature. Finally, landscape architecture is a very broad field of study. By reviewing the literature, both past and present, one can gain an appreciation of the depth and breadth of issues, affecting landscape design, planning, and management. Whether one examines landscapes through the romantic eyes of the fictional writers or the scientific eyes of the researcher, all of these works contribute to our understanding, as Americans, of the landscape and its impact on humankind. Some of the books listed will be fun to read, while others will be more technical in nature. I hope you enjoy this opportunity to investigate the literature that surrounds us as landscape architects.

The village of Chicago became the country's second largest city in 1889 because it captured many of the fastest-growing sectors of that economy. Businessmen and politicians enhanced Chicago's geographical position at the eastern edge of the nation's agricultural heartland, making it the center of multiple transportation networks. These supported wholesale trade and manufacturing which spurred the city's growth. Industry determined the physical development of the city itself, preempting space for zones of commerce and manufacturing and channeling the expansion of residential neighborhoods. During the twentieth century, new economic trends undermined Chicago's position; decentralization favored suburbs over cities, and the rise of the South and West created new centers of competition for the most dynamic sectors of the economy. Chicago developed because its site was convenient for commerce. For hundreds of years, American Indians gathered each summer to trade where the
