Lower Peninsula of Michigan
[Categories: Michigan geography, Peninsulas]
Michigan's lower peninsula is surrounded by water on all sides except its southern border, which it shares with (A midwestern state in north central United States in the Great Lakes region) Ohio and (A state in midwestern United States) Indiana . Geographically, the lower peninsula has a recognizable shape that many people associate with a mitten. This has led to several creation myths for the area, one being that it is a hand print of (A legendary giant lumberjack of the north woods of the United States and Canada; had a blue ox named Babe) Paul Bunyan , a giant lumberjack and favorite folk character in Michigan. This has also led to the distinctive phenomenon of lower peninisula residents holding out their hand and pointing to a spot on it when asked where they are from.
The lower peninsula is also known to Michiganders as "The Mitten", "Below the Bridge", and occasionally "The L.P." (in parallel with "the U.P." for the upper peninsula). It is referred to - with more than a little sarcasm - as " (The largest city in Michigan and a major Great Lakes port; center of the United States automobile industry; located in southeastern Michigan on the Detroit river across from Windsor)

Mark P. A. Robinson, Centre for the Study of Commercial Activity, Ryerson Polytechnic University The Ontario Environmental Assessment Act requires that all aspects of the environment be systematically evaluated in the search for preferred highway routes. This paper argues that the incorporation of computer-based decision support systems (DSS) into highway location planning could improve the quality and accountability of decisions by providing a traceable process that could be scrutinized by the public. While various researchers have provided a critique and appraisal of selected DSS, this research differs from yet complements these undertakings by using three DSS to evaluate a set of alternative highway alignments from an environmental assessment project in Southern Ontario, with particular emphasis placed on the application of selected sensitivity tests. In the concluding section a list of questions for assessing the value of DSS are first identified, and then related to the three DSS examined in this paper. There are certain kinds of information that youngsters need in order to function adequately as competent members of society. One of those areas is geography. Recent studies, even of college students, show that a surprising number of high school and college students have a remarkably poor understanding of geography-even a reasonable understanding of where major cities and countries are located in relation to one another. Where to begin? Start early with a basic investment of at least four maps that can be hung in your child's room: a map of the world, the USA, your own state, and one of your local region. Check with your local library if you have any difficulty locating the maps you need.

Time: 10 hours driving from Indianapolis, Indiana, 3-4 days there, 10 hours back
Cost: $Very little but for souvenirs/ferry fare What does it mean to be approached by a man with his right hand held out in high-five position, the other hand pointing to the tip of his ring finger? What if he starts spewing unintelligible, non-English sounding words to explain the hand gesture? What if this slew of babble was in response to the question "Where are you from?" Midwesterners know at the first hand gesture. The state of Michigan is shaped, sort of, like a mittened hand . This peculiarity enables Michiganites to describe Michigan geography in a particularly visual way; as for the non-English explanation, it's not English - many of Michigan's towns and cities are named in native tongue. In the example above, if the right hand is Michigan, the tip of the ring finger is extreme NW Michigan. More specifically, it's Petoskey, MI. Population: less than 7,000. Murder rate: close to zero. Density of tiny, cutesy shops and villas and olde tyme country home style cabin lodges: approaching capacity. Site of: a very unlikely road trip. It was kind of a last minute thing, but I drove from Evansville, Indiana, right on the southern tip, to Indianapolis, Indiana, right in the center of the state, one summer day to meet two friends with whom I would spend the next 10-plus hours in the car. My blurry recollection of the trip suggests the three of us sang along to Charlie Daniel's 'Devil Went Down to Georgia' at least eight thousand times, I somehow wrangled my way into riding shotgun for the entire trip, and there are very, very few things to see between Indianapolis and the state border.

Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3. The geography of Health Care in MI The DartmouthAtlas of Healthcare in michigan
http://www.bcbsm.com/atlas/geography.shtml
The Medicare program maintains exhaustive records of hospitalizations, which makes it possible to define the patterns of use of hospital care. When Medicare enrollees are admitted to hospitals, the program’s records identify both the patients’ places of residence (by ZIP Code) and the hospitals where the admissions took place (by a unique numerical identifier). These files provide a reliable basis for determining the geographic pattern of health care use, because research shows that the migration patterns of patients in the Medicare program are similar to those for younger patients. Medicare records of hospitalizations were used to define 3,436 geographically distinct hospital service areas in the United States. In each hospital service area, most of the care received by Medicare patients is provided by hospitals within the area. There are 109 of these hospital service areas in Michigan. The maps in this section show the location of each of these areas. Hospital service areas have been further aggregated into hospital referral regions, based on the pattern of use of cardiac surgery and neurosurgery. The maps also show the hospital referral regions to which the hospital service areas belong. There are 15 hospital referral regions in Michigan.
