RETENTION OF LOCAL TOWNS AND CITIES
INTRODUCTION
The National Forest Service, as a precursor to Elk introduction, has offered to purchase public land to create continuous habitat for migration.
METHODS
Research data for Urban Development was located through the Geographic Information System MapFactory, on Michigan Geography Maps compiled by Jennifer Stefannaci. These maps are available through the Michigan State University server. Specific methods used for the production of the Urban Development map were extremely simple, yet this particular map proved very valuable in the construction of additional maps used within this study. The original disturbance map was modified, as one town, measuring less than a kilometer square was removed from the map. This deletion was in response to purchase agreements that will possibly be made between the town and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources or the United States Forest Service.
FINDINGS
Any cities less than 1km were deleted on original maps found on the University GIS systems. An additional city was deleted, as it will be purchased by the United States Forest Service when development ensues.

Multi-layered Economic Restructuring in an Old Industrial Region: The Pittsburgh Transition
Sabina Deitrick, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA The restructuring of regional economies, particularly in older industrial regions, presents a complicatead version of a post-industrial transformation. Researchers have examined the relation between changes in the structure of production and regional development trends through the post-Fordist transition. Others have studied new propulsive forces in regional development through innovative local milieux. Transition, however is uneven across space. This paper examines theoretical reasons for the economic transition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, through an analysis of employment trends over the past decade. The findings show that, despite a quite remarkable economic turnaround in the late 1980s in the wake of severe steel-related employment losses, the region's pace has slowed considerably in the 1990s. The trend has shifted from a 1980s model of successful post-industrial transition to laggard growth in the 1990s. The article examines reasons for this change by adopting a multi-layered view of transition in older industrial regions.

Lake Michigan lies between the two peninsulas. The Upper peninsula is very sparsely populated, more than 90% of the peninsula being forested. The Lower peninsula contains the cities, industry, and agriculture. The Upper and Lower Peninsulas were connected in 1957 with the construction of Big Mac, the Mackinac Bridge." During the freeway era the automobile has pushed the extreme of metropolitan development to fringe locations many miles (or kilometers) from older downtown areas. The suburban city has become increasingly independent of the downtown city. By the end of the twelfth grade, students should be able to evaluate the physical and human impacts of emerging urban forms in the present-day world. Albert Ruger Thadeus Mortimer Fowler Oakley H. Bailey Lucien R. Burleigh ... Publishers of Panoramic Maps Albert Ruger (1829-1899) By 1866, Ruger had settled in Battle Creek, Michigan, where he began his prolific panoramic mapping career by sketching Michigan cities. Full descriptions of many Ruger views of Michigan cities are contained in John Cumming's A Preliminary Checklist of 19th Century Lithographs of Michigan Cities and Towns . Urban communities in some twenty-two states and Canada, ranging from New Hampshire to Minnesota and south to Georgia and Alabama, were sketched by Ruger. He continued his activity into the 1890s, moving his business to Chicago, Madison, and St. Louis as he sought new markets. In the late 1860s, Ruger formed a partnership with J. J. Stoner of Madison, Wisconsin, and together they published numerous city panoramas. Ruger was particularly productive during the 1860s; in 1869 alone, he produced more than sixty panoramic maps. In addition to city plans, he drew views of university campuses, among them Notre Dame, Shurtleff College, and the University of Michigan. Albert Ruger died in Akron, Ohio, on November 12, 1899. Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler (1842-1922) The Boston Public Library has six views drawn and published by Fowler in the 1870s. During that decade, he was employed as an artist by J. J. Stoner.
