The History of Genesee County, MI
Chapter XXIX
Oak Grove Hospital
OAK GROVE HOSPITAL.
One of the leading sanitariums in America is located in Flint. It is recognized by the most eminent men of the medical profession as a hospital, conducted along special lines, which has no superior in the entire community. The buildings and grounds are unsurpassed. Oak Grove Hospital, formerly Oak Grove Sanitarium, was organized under the laws of Michigan as Oak Grove Corporation in 1891, its object being the founding and administration of a thoroughly modern hospital for the treatment of nervous and mental diseases and of alcohol and drug addiction. Associated in the incipiency of the movement were James A. Remick and W. G. Vinton, of Detroit; Charles T. Mitchell, of Hillsdale, Michigan; and Dr. George C. Palmer, then superintendent of the Michigan asylum for the insane, at Kalamazoo. The sixty-five-acre grove of native oaks located near the eastern outskirts of Flint was selected for a site. This grove is now probably the last remaining oak clearing in Michigan. It has been preserved by Governor Henry h. Crapo, his intention being to build therein a mansion. The practical founder of the hospital was James A. Remick, of Detroit, who had served as a member of the board of trustees of the eastern Michigan asylum at Pontiac. The original buildings were erected by the Vinton Company, of Detroit, whose president, W. G. Vinton, was also president of the board of trustees of the eastern Michigan asylum. Mr. Vinton succeeded Justice H. B. Brown as president of Oak Grove Corporation, and was himself succeeded by George B. Remick, of Detroit. Mr. Remick died in 1913, and was succeeded by Dr. W. H. Sawyer, of Hillsdale, a regent of the University of Michigan. The original stockholders included James A. Remick, W. G. Vinton, G. J. Vinton, George B. Remick, and Thomas Pitts, of Detroit; C. T. Mitchell, of Hillsdale; William L. Smith and William Hamilton, of Flint.

This site contains two genealogy trees of my family within. Now with over 900 listings with less than 100 not directly in our family line. I left those names in to help in researching for other family members. If I found information and it somehow relates remotely to our family I have it available on this website. If the text appears too small to you can change your Internet Explorer under " View " the " Text size " and change it to Largest. Please forgive me. I have no control over people who do not want you to know they exist. It amazes me that many people in our families do not wish to let other FAMILY know they exist. Thus only being able to find information such as Living female/male appears. on some of my pages. Guestbook Please sign my Guest book! let me know you where here! Recently, a volunteer on this list sent me the following note. Please read it and consider it carefully. Volunteers are precious resources that the genealogy community can not afford to abuse. I am no longer able to do lookups due to the volume of emails I receive for help not related to my resource. I have people emailing me to get them birth certificates, to offer general genealogy advice, to do tombstone rubbings () - all sorts of stuff thathas nothing to do with my resource. It is out of hand and I can't sit here going through my email weeding out this garbage every day. I have had it. I am very sorry, and I know I have helped several people and I am glad of it - but there are too many people out there who are emailing me inappropriately. Please remove my address from your site.
Read this next!
I am not located in Michigan and have no resources myself. If something is not on the list, then I don't have access to it. Please read the list carefully. If you do not receive a response, consider that you may have asked for something to which the volunteer does not have access. Another good resource to try is

Census data, tribal histories and queries for the Ojibwa, Potawatomi and Ottawa are part of this Rootsweb site.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~minatam/
"People of the Three Fires": There are three major tribal groups in Michigan today: the Chippewa (Ojibwe), the Ottawa, and the Potawatomi. They comprise what is called the Three Fires Council. Although these three tribes have similar cultures and share the same territory, there are still some differences. Ottawa are found in the northern reaches of the Great Lakes; in michigan they occupy the western half of the Lower Peninsula. The Ottawa people were seasonal wanderers of the land and sailors of the Great Lakes gathering wild rice, netting fish, trapping both large and small game, and hunting large game such as moose, deer, and caribou. Ottawa people continue to be great traders and craftsmen. One hallmark of Ottawa life is the birch bark canoe. When the French came, the Ottawa people adapted well to the fur-trading economy and managed to avoid major military entanglements with the European colonial powers competing with each other for North American land and resource dominance. They did, however, fight with the Iroquois throughout the early 1600's.

This work is done in honor of my Mother, Maxine Virginia Reed 29 February 1916 ~ 7 February 1989 She did the very best she knew to do in the face of overwhelming adversity "Soar on the wings of angels my Sweet Mother" All of this work is bits and pieces of data I've collected over the years I've spent being a "pack-rat". I love history and research and was a saver of "tidbits of information" since I was a young child. Years before I ever thought about doing our families history. I will name my sources for all information if I know it. This information is being provided in the hope it will shed some light for others who are having some difficulty in finding their way on the path to their families beginnings. I can neither confirm or document any of this information other than as it's being provided here. I hope I'm able to help you toward that end. Jo
