Tracing Your Roots on the Web
Aired April 3 and 4, 1999 Listen to the show.
You must have RealAudio installed to listen to the show. Download RealAudio here. This is Internet On The Air. I'm Joan Silvi. Tracking down family roots on the Internet...Details in a moment. Funding Credit: Internet On The Air is a production of the University of Michigan School of Information and Michigan radio, made possible by a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Our distant ancestors never expected that details of their lives might someday show up on the Internet. Yet genealogists have turned the Web into an increasingly rich resource for tracing family roots. Ann Holt is the Director of the Capitol Library Cooperative. Holt got hooked on genealogy while helping others as a reference librarian at the Library of Michigan. The official State library caters to genealogists with its extensive collection of primary documents related to the state's history. Because genealogists rely heavily on primary sources, Holt says visits to libraries and archives will always be important. But most people only have time for occasional trips. So more and more collections are putting information online to help people plan more productive visits.

Detroit's First Asylums and Orphanages
Under a special Act of Legislaters, promoters of Charitable Insitiutions engaged in a movement to become incorporated in 1837 as The Ladies' Protestant Orphan Asylum.
The directors were Mrs. Charles C. Trowbridge, Mrs. Robert Stuart and Mrs. Thomas Palmer , and the Asylum was opened in a building donated, rent free, by Cullen Brown , on Beaubein Street, south of Fort Street.
The Institution, although has relocated several times, has remained in operation, with the exception of a 6 year interval, for over 125 years. It's incorporation under the name of The Protestant Orphan Asylum dates from June 8, 1889. At that time, it's location was at 988 Jefferson Avenue.
St Vincent's Catholic Orphan Asylum was later opened by the Catholic Female Association, who had organized in 1834, for the relief of the sick and poor of Detroit. It's organization almost coincided with the Cholera Epidemic that broke out in the city. The parish priest, Father Kundig , took care of 30 children, who's parents have fallen victim to the disease.
