Definitions Issues Research Data ... Cosequences
Definition of Terms In any discussion of the use of pound animals in research and education, certain terms are used whose precise meaning may be unfamiliar to many members of the public. Those terms are defined below: Pound -A facility established by local ordinance in which stray, abandoned and lost animals are held, or "impounded" for a period of time. The purpose of impoundment is to allow time for owners to claim lost pets or to find new homes for the animals. Animals neither claimed nor adopted at the end of this period are put to death. Shelter -A facility established and maintained by a private group to house abandoned animals. Like pounds, most shelters must put to death animals that remain unadopted after a period of time. In some locales, shelters also serve as pounds, receiving a fee for service from the municipal government for holding stray or lost animals. Random-Source Animal -A term used by scientists and those who keep records of animal acquisition to refer to any animal that has not been bred specifically for research. All pound animals are considered to be random-source animals.

Statement on Sexual Assault

Information and Programs on Sexual Assault
Introduction

Federal law requires institutions of higher education to develop and distribute a statement describing the institution’s programs that are aimed at the prevention of sexual offenses and the procedures for a victim to follow once a sexual offense has occurred. Through programs to prevent sexual assault( ) and to support victims of sexual assault, Michigan State University strives to create an environment free of sexual assault, sexual harassment and other forms of sexual victimization.
Educational Opportunities
Michigan State University provides a variety of preventive/educational activities to promote awareness of rape, acquaintance rape and other sex offenses, including: professional and peer presentations in living units, classes, co-curricular groups, orientation sessions and community sessions; written and video resources; and self-defense classes. These programs are developed and delivered by many University departments and student organizations. For example, workshops on self-defense and sexual assault awareness are offered throughout the year by the Sexual Assault Crisis and Safety Education Program (located in the Counseling Center), 207 Student Services, 355-8270; the Women’s Resource Center, 353-1635; and the Self-Defense for Women Program at IM-Sports West, 355-5250. A one-credit course in women’s self-defense (PES 106L) is also offered regularly. Technology groups develop Telecommunications Act goals By Mike Souden Since March of 1994 MACUL has worked with several other State organizations to impact the rewriting of the education portion of the Michigan Telecommunications Act, Public Act 179. The coalition, the Educational Telecommunications Coalition, has reached general consensus on six major areas that the MTA needs to address in order for education in Michigan to have access to the telecommunications infrastructure that the rest of the world takes for granted. The reason that this issue is of more importance now than in previous years is the window of opportunity that is presented because the current telecommunications act sunsets at the end of 1995. It is important to note that this coalition is very broad based representing the following organizations:
MACUL
MADL
MAME

REMC 13
Berrien County Intermediate School District
Muskegon Intermediate School District Macomb Intermediate School District Washtenaw Intermediate School District Michigan Department of Education Shiawassee Regional Education Service District Eastern Michigan University Oakland Schools REMC 7 Romeo Community Schools Wayne County Education Service District The paper is published below.
