Tip Sheet #12 - WALKING THE EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION TALK by Julie Clark Gillespie, Ottawa Area Intermediate School District
Introduction
As amazing as it may seem, a child’s ability to learn is greater between the ages of birth and four years than at any other time in his or her life. With that in mind (and as part of our early childhood education initiative) Ottawa Area Intermediate School District (OAISD) gave birth to the idea of providing our staff members who are first-time parents with a "gift" of early learning knowledge and research. Funded through a research and development grant, the "gift"—a tote bag loaded with good stuff—reflects the professional expertise and personal experiences of OAISD staff, many of whom specialize in parent and early childhood education.
Project Team
To develop, design and deliver the finished product, we assembled a team that included human resources staff; instructional services staff (representing early childhood, health education, and parent learning/resources); day care and instructional staff from our Careerline Tech Center program; and staff from COPE, our program for pregnant teenagers. We called this group our Parent Resource Team.
Project Development
The Parent Resource Team met regularly for about a year to discuss content and the best format for delivering information to new parents. The team discussed what information was vital for new parents, and what "tools" could be reasonably and practically included as a gift to "first time" parents. Our subject matter experts provided written information including recommended resources, and some of their personal parenting stories. The result is a canvas tote bag full of fun, practical, and educational items for new parents.
