Editor
Kees van der Veen Byrd Polar Research Center Quarterly publication first published in 1977 as a vehicle for making available, in English translation, important Soviet, Japanese, and west European research on the polar regions. Over the years, the journal's focus has shifted to the north circumpolar region with emphasis on the Russian Arctic, publishing articles dealing with human as well as physical dimensions of Arctic and Subarctic environments. The new editorial team from Byrd Polar Research Center and the Department of Geography at The Ohio State University are broadening the geographic scope and scientific content of Polar Geography . As the Arctic and Antarctic are integral components of the global climate system, the editors will publish papers with a polar focus that recognize these global interactions and thus will be of interest to a broader audience than just the polar scientific community. The journal offers scientists a venue for publishing longer papers such as might result from distillation of a thesis, or review papers that place in global context results from coordinated (international) research efforts currently underway in both polar regions. Geographically, Mesoamerica is located between the Sinaloa River valley in northern Mexico and the Gulf of Fonseca south of El Salvador; it encompasses most of present-day Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and western Honduras, where great differences in altitude and rainfall result in numerous distinct climatic and ecological zones. Mesoamerica is culturally divided into two parts: central Mexico roughly west and north of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and the Maya region to the east and south.

About Oaxaca
The program is based in the City of Oaxaca, in the southeastern part of Mexico. Oaxaca's city center with its outdoor cafes and its historic buildings offer a glimpse of Mexico's colonial past, while the new settlements spreading up the hillsides and the ongoing protests in the Zocalo, the main plaza, point to some of the more problematic issues facing this area. The program also includes several fieldtrips into the countryside. The state of Oaxaca is in itself a world of many worlds. The state's ecosystems range from deserts and high mountain cloud forests to tropical rainforests and coastal regions, yielding the greatest geographical range and biodiversity in Mexico.

ANCIENT LAKE JALISCO AND THE SANTIAGO RIVER
A narrative by Jack Leyden
This article originally appeared in "Mexico Living and Travel Update" , Fall 1994,
and is presented here with their kind permission.
The following is a story concerning an ancient lake that covered a large area of the State of Jalisco and spread into Michoacan and Aguascalientes. This map is a visual portrayal of the lake superimposed on a regional map. The south central portion of the State of Jalisco presents a panorama of lakes arranged in the form of a right angle, with one leg oriented east-west and the other north-south. Starting with the largest lake in the east they are: Chapala, Cajititlan and El Molino: then turning abruptly south are Atotonilco, Zacoalco, San Marcos, Atoyac, Sayula and Zapotlan. All of these lakes range from shallow to dry. For instance, Chapala has a mean depth of twenty-nine feet, whereas other lakes, such as San Marcos, are covered by water only during the wet season of the year. Having studied a similar series of lake basins in eastern California, I came to the conclusion that probably at one time all of these lakes were connected by drowning of the low divides separating them, forming one huge lake. If such a lake did occur in the geological past there must be evidence to prove its existence. Such proof would include stratified deposits of lake sediments, wave cut terraces and deep gorges of rivers that drained the lake basin. I attempted to research any work that had been done on this particular theory and discovered that Mr. George Mitchell, in collaboration with several other people, had done considerable work on this very same idea. I pursued their work and in addition attempted to verify some concepts of my own.
