Contact Us STATISTICS: GDP Mexico Economy slows down to a halt. M exico's economy was expected to growth by 1 percent or more this year. The United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) forecasts GDP growth of 1.0 percent, while the International Monetary Fund predicts economic growth of 1.7 percent for 2002. Mexico's Central Bank itself forecasts 1.8 percent. Even the lower estimate is better than last year, when the economy declined by 0.3 percent, according to the IMF. The weak results in 2001 and this year follow the strong performance of 6.9 percent GDP growth in 2000, largely spurred by exports to the United States. GDP: $617.9 billion Annual Growth in % Sources: International Monetary Fund, ECLAC, Latin Business Chronicle Another key revenue earner - tourism - was significantly affected in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks against U.S. targets, although the sector may pick up as U.S. residents choose it over long-haul destinations like Europe.

Antidumping actions in the United States and EU are known to be linked to macroeconomic conditions. In part, this is because positive injury findings may be easier to make in a downturn. We explore the evidence for Mexico, one of the main "new" antidumping using countries. Injury determination is also critica! in Mexico's antidumping policy, as a majority of unsuccessful complaints have been rejected because of negative injury findings rather than negative findings of dumping. Working with data from 1987 through 2000, we provide evidence for a relationship between macro-economic factors and antidumping complaints, including current account and exchange rate movements, and both local and global general macroeconomic conditions. El Paso Branch Mexico's Economy in 1998 and 1999 Mexico's economy in the second half of the 1990s has experienced some dramatic moments, which essentially started with an unexpected peso devaluation in December 1994. This was followed in 1995 by the most severe economic crisis Mexico has witnessed since the 1930s. Yet, later that year a recovery was already under way, which solidified in 1996 and 1997. Then, in 1998, Mexico was hit by several external shocks that pushed the economy into lower-than-expected growth and higher-than-expected inflation. This article examines Mexico's 1998 economic performance and discusses this year's outlook.

    Good year for investment
According to Héctor Rangel Domene, the president of the Business Coordination Council (Consejo Coordinador Empresarial, CCE), this should be a good year for economic growth and investment. The CCE estimates that 350,000 new jobs will be generated this year. Analysts surveyed by the central bank, Bank of Mexico (Banxico), predicted that GDP would grow 3.23% this year, with inflation of about 4%. The Finance Secretary Francisco Gil Díaz is confident that the economy is growing at more than 3% a year.
