Business cycles in Mexico and the United States: Do they share common movements?

Abstract
In this document I apply a recently developed econometric technique to prove the existence of common movements between time series. Said methodology is used to test and measure the existence of common cycles between the economies of Mexico and the United States for the 1993-2001 period. It is found that both economies share a common trend and a common cycle. Also, given the existence of one common cycle between these economies, it is found that transitory shocks affecting Mexico’s GDP are more important than when a conventional trend-cycle decomposition methodology is applied. Finally, it is shown that there are efficiency gains in forecasting by considering the common cycle restriction in a bivariate vector error correction model that includes the Mexican and the U.S. GDPs. Global Business Trends, Partners, Hot Products , explores the factors affecting U.S. exports, imports and trade balances, and includes detailed trade data from 1992 to 2003 on U.S. imports and exports by HTS code and data from 1997 to 2003 estimating the dollar value of plastics contained in a wide variety of products (organized by NAICS code) imported into and exported from the U.S. Global Business Trends, Partners, Hot Products The special section on trade in contained plastics products goods that are not reported as plastics products or resin , for example packaging for food and tobacco products, textile products, clothing, agricultural, building and construction, transportation and electronic products and many others, from 1997 to 2003. New to the 2004 edition is an examination of “true” vs. apparent consumption. The measure of domestic resin and plastics products consumption normally used, called “apparent consumption,” undercounts "true" consumption (the amount of consumption that actually exists) and understates the rate of consumption growth. The higher growth rate of true consumption makes it clear that domestic resin and plastics products demand is still growing and that producers are losing share in their own domestic market. WORLD BANK IMPRESSED The Mexican economy posted the highest economic growth rate in Latin America last year, according to a World Bank survey released in April. One World Bank economist, Uri Dadush, said that the economy has resisted problems in Asia and Brazil and "is now reaping the benefits of the North American Free Trade agreement". Dadush praised the economic reforms put in place in the wake of the problems in 1994 saying that "Mexico's policies in the last two to three years have set the conditions for growth." These policies have been the raising of interest rates to combat inflation, the reduction in government expenditure to offset revenue losses from lower oil prices, and the maintenance of a flexible exchange rate to prevent currency speculation.
FALLING INFLATION
The national consumer price index rose by only 0.93% during March, the lowest monthly rise for 10 months. Figures released by the central bank, Banxico, show that inflation since January 1 has been 4.87%, suggesting that it may still be possible to meet the official target for inflation of 13% over the year.
