Make the most of your time in Santa Fe and let a personal guide accompany you to some of our outstanding historic, cultural and scenic points of interest. Come on a preview tour and get a glimpse of our part of the Southwest and a brief description of places you can learn more about during your visit such as cliff dwellings, indian pueblos, Taos and the Georgia O'Keeffe country. As a long time resident of Santa Fe I've come to love the diversity of the terrains and the variety of the cultures. Since 1985 I've enjoyed sharing what I've learned about the Southwest with people from all over the world in groups from one to forty.

The first Mexican culture of which archaeological evidence has been discovered is the Olmec. Subsequent cultures following and overlapping were the Maya, Zapotec and Mixtec, Teotihuacan, Toltec and finally Aztec. The Aztecs had successfully expanded their rule over many other peoples in Mexico until, in 1519, a Spanish expedition under Hernan Cortes landed at Tabasco. By 1521 the Spaniards had defeated the Aztecs and established the colony of New Spain. In 1836, after years of struggle, Mexico finally won her independence from Spain. In the same year, American settlers who were now in a majority in Texas tried to break from Mexico, resulting in fighting between the USA and Mexico. Civil wars wracked Mexico throughout the 1850s, leading to European intervention, and finally, the capture of Mexico City by the French army which placed Archduke Maximilian of Austria on the throne of Mexico. After Maxilian was defeated and then executed, Mexico enjoyed its longest period free from war, under President Diaz. His failure to deliver political freedom led to the Revolution which lasted from 1911-1920. Through the 1920s and 30s the reforms for which the Revolution was fought (land reform, education, a reduction in Church power) were put into practice. In 1938 the oil industry and the USA and British owned companies were nationalized. By 1980 Mexico had become an important world oil producer. The oil revenues and the loans provided by overseas banks led to increasing inflation, and eventually, a financial collapse in 1982.

    Instituto Cultural Oaxaca Oaxaca
Instituto Cultural Oaxaca offers a unique immersion program combining intense Spanish language classes with afternoon cultural workshops. Through a total of up to 7 hours of daily interaction, our program presents students with the opportunity not only to learn Spanish, but also to understand the richness of the Mexican culture. The Instituto Cultural Oaxaca offers exposure to many of the region’s cultural treasures. Not far from the city are magnificent archaeological sites that highlight the civilizations that have existed in the area for thousands of years. The 16 ethnic groups that make up the rich culture of the state continue to influence the language, art and music of the city and the many villages of the area. The artistic expression of this legacy results in some of the most beautiful and sought-after folkart in Mexico.
    The Location
Nestled in the central valley of the state of Oaxaca, this beautiful city is located 530km (300 miles) southwest of Mexico City and 212 km (120 miles) from the pristine beaches of the Pacific coast. The tropical mountains and valleys that surround the city create a microclimate that hosts many thousands of plant varieties and, combined with the altitude of 1,500 meters (5,000 feet), ensures mild weather conditions.

Return to top Location The program takes place primarily in Mexico City, Mexico—the capital, seat of government and center of commerce and the arts for Mexico. Mexico City, a city steeped in history, was built on the ruins of Tenochtitl¡n, the great ancient city of the Aztec civilization. Today Mexico City is one of the biggest, most complex and most beautiful cities in the world. Over 20 million people live in the city proper and metropolitan area. Its culture and architecture have been greatly influenced by the various civilizations and nations that converged in and reigned over the area during thousands of years. Program participants will also have the opportunity to visit Oaxaca, which is approximately 300 miles from Mexico City and is recognized worldwide for its hospitality and mixture of the indigenous and occidental culture. Key sites of interest in Oaxaca include Monte Alb¡n, the site of pyramids and ruins, local churches, and historic Oaxaca.

Pour moi, la culture de l'Europe a fait faillite et j'estime que dans le developpement sans frein de ses machines l'Europe a trahi la veritable culture; et moi, a mon tour, je me veux traitre a la conception europeenne du progres.1 In Notes sur les cultures orientales, Artaud writes that he had journeyed to Mexico in order to leave "Old World" European civilization (which he qualifies as "Barbaric")2 for the "New World" where he hoped to find, paradoxically, an ancient, primary and true culture predating Old World culture and its subsequent colonialization of the New World. In Mexico, where this "New World" ancient culture was to be found, Artaud was however disappointed to discover the corpse of the very civilization he had fled.

Knowing that LGBTQ people are being turned down by some organizations helping hurricane victims, we will donate part of the proceeds from Sunday's show to an organization offering assistance to members of the LGBTQ community. Her fresh and provocative take on the world has delighted those around her from a young age. But it was a surprising turn of events, which led Suzanne Westenhoefer to become one of the top comedians in America today. After playing at theatres, clubs, and colleges internationally, Suzanne starred in her own HBO comedy special, which was nominated for a Cable ACE award. Suzanne does over 100 live comedy dates a year, in addition to her film and television work. While she often performs in large theatres, she loves returning to the comedy clubs where she got her start. Her CD NOTHING IN MY CLOSET BUT MY CLOTHES is a best-seller and won the prestigious Gay and Lesbian American Music Award (GLAMA) for Best Comedy CD. She repeated this feat with her new already best-selling CD
