Developed through the Museum of New mexico and the New mexico Department of Transportation, this traveling exhibition highlights some of the discoveries. Search a database by sites, projects, counties, cultures or materials, and find links to related Web sites.
http://www.roadstothepast.org
Traveling exhibition and website made possible by generous support from MetLife Foundation, McCune Charitable Foundation,
and the New Mexico Department of Transportation. Since 1954, New Mexico has been the home of the nation's first and longest continuing Highway Archaeology Program. The Federal Highway Administration, the New Mexico Department of Transportation, and the Museum of New Mexico jointly fostered this program, over their common concern that irreplaceable parts of our country's past were being lost to construction. Protecting cultural resources is still a collaborative effort involving federal and state agencies, tribal communities, and committed archaeologists. Today, all highway construction projects designed to improve our roadways are preceded by archaeological investigations. Sponsored by the New Mexico Department of Transportation, this research provides a unique opportunity to advance our understanding of the past and to better tell the story of New Mexico's rich cultural legacy. Developed through the efforts of the Museum of New Mexico and the New Mexico Department of Transportation, this exhibit celebrates the history of the New Mexico Highway Archaeology Program and highlights some of the many important discoveries that benefit both professionals and the public.

Cinco de Mayo: A Mexican Festival (May the 5th) Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican victory festival observed by Mexicans and Mexican-American communities. This day celebrates patriotism, unity and Mexican heritage. What is patriotism? It is to love our country. Spanish is the predominant language in Mexico and also widely spoken by Mexican communities living in the United States and elsewhere. Around 50 indigenous languages are spoken in Mexico by about 5 million people. Cinco de Mayo means May the 5th. On May 5, 1862, although greatly outnumbered, Mexican soldiers conquered an army of French and Mexican rebel soldiers at Puebla, Mexico. The Mexican soldiers demonstrated great courage, unity, leadership and patriotism a deep love for their families, home and country on that day. To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, Mexican communities hold festivals, parades, and cultural events.

Native American Indian Cultures Indian Cultures from Mexico and South America Hands Around the World introduces unique Indian cultures from Mexico and various parts of South America, particularly the Amazon basin. We are rapidly becoming a global culture. Many of the Native American cultures, especially in North America, have been lost forever and are still honored only in myth and memory. Fortunately there are some Indian cultures that are relatively intact, especially in Amazonia. Hands Around the World feels that it is important to preserve the art, stories, myths, belief systems, details of day to day life, in short all aspects of Native American culture while we still can. This web site is an educational resource to introduce these unique indigenous tribes. We have provided web links to use as additional educational resources. We encourage you to browse this site to learn more about these interesting cultures. They Kill Horses, Don't They? (Mexicans, That Is.)
By Brenda Walker Here in northern California, American animal lovers are watching the final stages of the case of two Mexican illegal aliens who got drunk and killed a horse for fun. Liobijildo Guzman Herrera and Noel Guido-Silva, both farmworkers, ended a night of drinking last April 26 by driving their vehicles around a field near Kenwood, chasing a terrified 23-year-old mare, running her down and causing her a painful death. Gentle Song , a retired race horse with three victories in 27 starts, belonged to a 13-year-old girl. Mexico has no laws against animal cruelty and is known for its blood sports like bullfighting and cockfights . So we have to understand the Mexicans' reprehensible behavior in a cultural context. Diversity, as we all know, is our strength.

Scientists believe people living in central Mexico developed corn at least 7000 years ago. It is actually a type of grass. The original corn did not look like the corn we know today. The kernels were spaced farther apart and were differently shaped. Now, corn kernels are tightly packed and similarly shaped. The most common type of corn you will most likely find on dinner tables around the country is known as sweet corn and is shown in the picture. If you'd like to know more about this wonderfully diverse veggie read about it here.
