Unit 1: Introduction to Scientific Methods Lesson 20: Introduction to Measurement Objectives: After completing the lesson, students will be able to:
identify the basic units for measuring length, liquid volume, mass, and temperature using the International System of Units
identify the measurement tools to measure length, liquid volume, mass, and temperature in the International System of Units
identify the prefixes used in the International System of Units, and explain what they mean
convert units of measurement in the International System of Units Key Question: "How do scientists measure objects?" Overview: In this introductory lesson, students are introduced to the Inte rnational System of Units (abbreviated SI), as a process scientists use to measure length, liquid volume, mass, and temperature. It is best left up to the individual teacher how best to explain the International System of Units, and the metric system from which it was derived. It is important that students are exposed to the vocabulary of the metric system, and learn how to calculate conversions between units. It is also a good idea to allow some time for students to practice using rulers, balances, graduated cylinders, and thermometers. Measuring objects they bring to class or themselves is usually an interesting approach. The important goal is exposure: future lessons will provide students with a chance to measure objects in a more interesting context.

Metric Measurements The metric system of measurement is used in almost all countries throughout the world. The notable exception is the United States. For the marketing of paper, the conversion of the customary units to the metric system may be accomplished by the application of formulas to move from inches to millimeters and pounds to grams. Sizes The size of paper in metric measure is stated in millimeters. There are 25.4 millimeters in one inch. The procedure is to multiply the inches by 25.4, and round off to the nearest millimeter. For example: to convert the size of standard letter size from inches to millimeters 8 1/2" x 25.4 mm = 215.9 mm and 11" x 25.4 mm = 279.4 mm. The measurement therefore becomes 216 mm x 279 mm. Basis weight The basis weight of paper and paperboard is stated in grams per square meter (g/m To convert from basis weight in pounds the following formula may be applied equally to basis ream weights of any dimension, e.g. 17" x 22", 25" x 38", 24" x 36".

How do I convert to metric? Temperature - To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius (the unit Centigrade is no longer used) subtract 32 and multiply the result by 5/9. Other imperial units - The following Table is taken from the Schedule to the Units of Measurement Regulations 1995, SI 1995 No 1804. These Regulations provide, from their coming into force on 1 October 1995 (and, for some uses, from 1 January 2000), for those uses of the imperial system for which no implementing legislation has made specific provision. Where, before those dates, use is made in legislation, or in any deed or document (for example), of an imperial unit in the circumstances specified in Directives 71/1354/EEC and 80/181/EEC and legal effect is to be given to that use after those dates, these Regulations provide for its conversion into the metric equivalent. No such conversion from imperial to metric is, however, made in those circumstances where use of imperial units may lawfully continue. For example: where an imperial unit is used as a supplementary indication; the use of the pint for dispensing draught beer and cider.

the Metric System

A Capsule History The United States is now the only industrialized country in the world that does not use the metric system as its predominant system of measurement. Most Americans think that our involvement with metric measurement is relatively new. In fact, the United States has been increasing its use of metric units for many years, and the pace has accelerated in the past three decades. In the early 1800s, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (the government's surveying and map-making agency) used meter and kilogram standards brought from France. In 1866, Congress authorized the use of the metric system in this country and supplied each state with a set of standard metric weights and measures. In 1875, the United States solidified its commitment to the development of the internationally recognized metric system by becoming one of the original seventeen signatory nations to the Treaty of the Meter.

Sign In Join/Renew Going Metric Going Metric: Not Including Metric Measurements in Ads Could Cost You Business Overseas Release Date: 07/ 08/ 2005 by Jeffrey Moses Many small businesses in the United States place ads in international magazines, newspapers and other media. When doing so, they often automatically include all measurements – length and distance, weight and volume – in "American" terms, such as inches and feet, ounces and cubic feet. A potential buyer in a country that uses the metric system exclusively may have somewhat negative feelings about ads that express units of measurement solely in non-metric terms. Conversely, buyers who have grown up with and use metric measurements daily may not understand non-metric measurements. As a result, they may have trouble visualizing a product or service. Readers who are offended or confused by use of non-metrics may feel that the company placing the ad does not care enough to address local concerns of potential buyers. It may portray an image of a company that is distant, overly American (or British) and uncaring or uninformed about local needs and customs. These perceptions are decidedly negative and can lead to reduced sales.

Question:
What are some extension/enrichment activities I can use with advanced 4th and 5th grade students using metric measurement? Answer:
Here are several activities that you might want to do with your students regarding metric measurement. A fairly simple lesson that the kids all enjoy is called "Metric Me". Students work together in pairs. Using a metric tape measure, they take turns measuring each other and posting the measurements on a chart. We measure arm length, shoulder width, leg length, foot length, torso length, circumference of head, neck, upper arm, wrist, ankle, chest, waist, etc. Another fun activity is to send your students on a metric scavenger hunt. This can be done at school or given as a homework assignment. Have students find objects whose lengths are 1 cm, 10 cm, 50 cm, 1 m, and objects that have a mass of 1 g, 10g, 50 g, 100g, 1 kg. You can also use other units of measure, such as decimeters, millimeters, etc. An interesting metric project can be found at the following web address: http://www.create.cett.msstate.edu/create/classroom/lplan_view.asp?articleID=102

A Dictionary of Units by Frank Tapson This provides a summary of most of the units of measurement to be found in use around the world today (and a few of historical interest), together with the appropriate conversion factors needed to change them into a 'standard' unit of the SI.
The units may be found either by looking under the
in which they are used, (length energy etc.) category
or by picking one unit from an alphabetically ordered list of units There is an outline of the S I system a list of its 7 basic definitions some of its derived units together with a list of all the S I prefixes and some of the rules and conventions for its usage On the subject of measures generally, there is a short historical note Then there are descriptions of the Metric system and the U K (Imperial) system followed by statements on the implementation of 'metrication' in the U K and then the U S system of measures
At the bottom of this document is a list of other sources and also some links to other Web sites Finally there are some notes on this material

Here are the metric measurements of length.
The basic unit is the meter. A meter is close to a yard in length (1 meter = 1.093 yd.), and there are 2.54 centimeters in one inch, and about 1.6 kilometers in one mile.
There are 1000 meters in a kilometer, and 1000 millimeters in a meter.
