Twentieth-century scholarship on early Methodists was too long impeded by interpretations treating them as members of the respectable "mainline" Protestant denominations responsible for civilizing a new United States that, because of the work of the founding fathers, was already substantially in place politically, socially, and culturally before the denominations got to work. That historiography is now defunct. It has been replaced by a range of fresh interpretations. Donald Mathews, a pioneer of the new Methodist history, has been joined by Gregory Schneider in showing how early Methodism underwent extraordinary, even tragic, redirection in its first fifty years.
